RE: LiPo fire mid-flight
I've had troubles when one cell did not charge properly, but showed close to 4.2V when charged. When flying it pretty quickly got below 3.0V. ESC did not notice (since total pack voltage is still well above 30V), but I felt less performance so I landed. That one cell inflated big time but no fire. Can't imagine otherwise why a pack would fail unless a short developed somehow. Volkert

Original YGE-90 is a great controller and for sale. On an expensive plane I also would be hesitant. Although specs and software can be the same you cannot be sure on component sourcing and build quality. I just bought a YEP45 to test. Volkert

Anybody with long time experience charging at 5 C by now? I have one Thunderpower 4400mAh G6 ProLite 25C pack with 120 cycles which seems to be holding up well until now. Volkert EDIT: this is btw what is found at the TP website on running in new packs: First few Flights Thunder Power recommends no more than 3-5C average discharge for breaking in new packs. Also be extremely careful not to over discharge new packs (Packs should NEVER be over discharged at any time, but over discharging on the first flight will ruin the battery permanently before you are able to enjoy it.

RE: Batteries running-in and swollen batteries
I really wonder about this "running in" story. I think it depends on the failure mode. I recognise at least three different ones: - indivudual cell unbalance versus the rest of the pack. This effect will be greater when reaching maximum discharge (<3V). - increase of internal resistance over time resulting in reduced Max C delivery - reduction of capacity over time Running in packs IMHO has the effect that you take more care the first few runs in charging/discharging which will help in detecting failure mode #1. I have had other packs that i never run in, actually were discharged fullu serveral times to the max and still ran fine upto 300 cycles, only with some reduced total capacity. I've had other packs I really carefully ran in which I retired after 100+ flights due to increased Ir. The link provided gives some great insights in what influences actual pack build quality. That initial quality will have much greater influence that the running in methodology used. Volkert

RE: KMP / YT FW-190 Build Thread
Hi guys, I am about to finish building my FW-190. I redid it a bit, making it a replica of the famous ace Heinz Bar, who typically flew the red 13 (and not a yellow 11 like this model). Unfortunately I have not been able to figure out how to post pictures from iPad on this forum so I can only provide a link to a small buildthread I am doing on a Dutch forum: http://www.modelbouwforum.nl/forums/vliegende-schaalmodellen/161987-kmp-esm-fw-190-a-6.html She's going to be powered by a Laser twin 200v with 18-8 prop. Retracts are ESM electrics. OK, now a question: for mounting the engine did you just follow instructions (just 6mm below centerline) or did you build in some side/down thrust? Also, on my firewall ESM put a sort of centerline horizontal and vertical. However, they don't seem to be very specific. Volkert

So to clarify the rules are that the airplane is less then 5 kg, and the maximum size is 2 meters long, 2 meters wingspan. You can compete today if you want to with your Angel 30, it does not have to be a 2meter ship. Volkert

The YGE90 worked perfectly. I do recognize the issue of misfire after downline. However, i would still recommend this controller. I also find it more efficient then the jeti opto-99. About 5-10%, which is notable. I flew mine with Plettenberg 30-10 and Advance. Volkert

RE: Ordered new batteries . . . we'll see . . .
I've got a new solution. I only fly now with one set of batteries (TP4400 25 C) which I can charge at the field with 5C (we now have solar powered battery station at 24-30VDC) with my iCharger 3010. Thus i charge the set in 8-10 minutes. I now fly a Spark with C50. Power consumption in this combo is really low so I fly 8 minutes using no more then 3000 mAh (so I could fly even longer but by now my mind is so used to flying these 8 minutes I sortof automatically land (-: ). Joe, I still have one of my original Rhinos (one was in a crash and burned out, the other I gave away to a fellow flyer who needed a good pack). This Rhino now has done >>250 flights but refuses to quit! It is still good, balance is fine and Ir good (25mOhm for the pack). Only capacity is reduced to ~4500mAh. They are incredible! Volkert

RE: Experience of using high LiPo charge rates
ORIGINAL: klhoard . I use FMA PL8 chargers and charged my HobbyKing Blue ($40) 5S-5000 LiPo's all last year at 10 amps (2C) at the field and 20 amps (4C) at home. I would have charged at the higher rate at the field, but my poor generator would ''dance'' at the higher rate. . I'm convinced that it is more important for battery longevity to store / keep your batteries at 50% charge rate (3.8V per cell) as much as possible. Every time you fully charge your LiPo it is the same as winding up a rubber band to its limit. The longer you make it hold that potential, the more damage you're doing to the cell. Also, every time you discharge it past 20%, you're doing the same thing. That's why they come from the factory at 50% charge. . . . I am adamant about finishing the flying day with a storage charge, preferably at the field, but definitely at home. Then I don't charge them back up until I am either at the field or until I've committed to go to the flying field for the day. It doesn't take long to bring a battery up to full charge from 50% at 20 amps. . . also my field just got connected to ''the grid'' . . . (yay!!) .
Amen to that; charge tour batteries not too long before flying and store them at 50%. Another, even better solution is to go flying everyday! :-) unfortunately i have not been able to get to that point yet! Volkert

RE: Experience of using high LiPo charge rates
I have been charging my old&faithful Rhino packs already for a long time at first 1.5C and now 2C. These are the old ones, later makes were 2C charge by the manufacturer, but I don't believe they really changed anything beside the spec. These have run 250 cycles now and are still good. I have also used 3 sets of Xcell lipos which i charged from the start with 1.5C but I never liked them much. I sold them after app. 80 cycles. They were always showing somewhat high (4-6ohm/cell) Ir. I now run one TP 4400 25C which I charge with 11amp (the max I get out of my current power supply/charger combo). Combined with the low power usage I see on the Hacker C50 (2500-2700 per flight) my recharge time is about 20 minutes. Effectively i now only use this one battery with the old Rhino as backup. The TP is doing great and i see no adverse effects of the higher charge rates. Volkert

RE: Plettenberg maintenance?
Interesting. On my 30-10, it just fell off. Can't imagine on the 30-09 it is a different design. You might want to check with Plettenberg if they can send you a spare one. It can't be a very expensive part. It might actually be that if you heat it, the ring will expand more then the bearing, because it is not a very hard metal. So, following that logic you might want to put it in the freezer. Maybe then it comes out easy. Volkert
