RE: Am I overheating or what?
Just throwing this thought in the mix: based on the pics I don't see this happening, but is it possible that exhaust is being drawn back into the cowl and introducing "stale" air? This came to mind because once I was riding a friend's jet ski and the exhaust broke letting carbon dioxide fill the engine compartment and it ran very similar to what you describe. Probably not likely in this case but another possibility that hasn't been considered.

RE: Which way to smoke?
Harris makes the best smoke pump IMO. A guy at my field tried them all and now he uses Harris, so do I.

RE: Removing Robart hinge points question
ORIGINAL: FLAPHappy If it were me, I would cut all of the hinge points. Cut them off flush, then sand smooth. Reinstall new hinge points away from the existing hinges.
I second this. I tried all the methods I read about and didn't have much luck. Easiest way for me was to relocate the new ones. I was recovering anyway so I was able to hide the old holes.

RE: Your list of hightest quality engines?
Gas: either DA or DLE. I have both and see no difference other than a polished case and slight weight advantage with DA Personally I think DA is a little over priced but that's just me GLow: OS is top in my opinion, have had dozens for years with zero failures second is Saito for me By the way, I'm still always amazed at the torture glow engines can take and seemingly run indefinately. Pretty impressive for motors so small. I mainly fly gas only at this point but I still love glow engines.

Prop To Slow Down Lines
I'm running a Bolly 27x10 on a 35% Hanger 9 260 with a DA100 (old version). The combo seems to pull very well on verticals and noise isn't bad at all with throttle management. The only thing I'd like to improve is a little braking on down lines. This thing screams on down lines leaving limited time to complete maneuvers without panicking or rushing. I also have a hard time slowing the thing down to land. It just wants to keep on flying. The only reason I have the Bolly is because it was on the airframe when I bought it. Does anyone have a suggestion that will give me what I want without sacrificing pulling power? I know a three blade will have some braking effect but from what I understand it be at the expense of vertical pull and I definately can't afford that.

S MAxx Runs Backwards?
Posting this for a friend (I'm a plane guy). He just did some work on his gas S Mazz (no reverse gear installed) and now it only goes backwards. Any thoughts?

RE: anyone put Ultracote over Ultracote.
Monocoat over Ultracoat: I tried this once. Initially the job looked great, but in time the U/C started to sag and the monocoat didn't, it created wrinkles everywhere the overlays were. I tried to clean it up by reshrinking but there was no fixing it. It ended up a pretty disappointing mess. This might work for some but mine didn't turn out well.

RE: anyone put Ultracote over Ultracote.
Funny that I stumbled on this thread. I just completed recovering the bottom of the wings on my giant scale for visibility with UC over UC. I got through it but it wasn't a walk in the park. I tried using the lowest heat setting I could but still had problems with bubbles. The overlays I was doing were large so this likely contributed, not to mention this was the 1st time I did this with Ultracoat. The completed job looked good but I spent some time popping bubbles with a needle. If I had it to do over again I think I'd try a wood pecker.

RE: 40 size 3d planes...which do you prefer? 2 or 4 stroke
In answer to the original question on this thread, my vote goes for 4 stroke hands down. In my opinion there's no 2 stroke that can deliver the instant power like a 4 stroke and I've flown plenty of both.

RE: wanting to start questions
Yep, that was CAPI I was talking about. And you're right, there were two of that exact same plane competing in basic. I can't remember they guy's name that took second but he's a real nice guy. We talked for a bit during and after it was over. I made some really dumb mistakes but learned a lot from them. For one thing I didn't even know the names of most of the maneuvers and only had the sequence halfway memorized by the second day. I got zeroed out more than once for doing the wrong maneuver at the wrong time and had trouble with the spins. Not to mention getting nervous when it was my turn to fly. It's hard to be smooth when my thumbs are shaking. All in all it was a blast though. Like I said I went in with no expectations so there were no disappointments. Can't wait to get out and practice for the next one.

RE: wanting to start questions
I second all that others have responded with. I flew my first contest over this past weekend and had a lot of fun. I went in with no expectations and viewed it as a learning experience. I went by myself and had no problem finding experienced pilots to call for me and offer lots of pointers/tips. Met some really nice folks and learned a lot. One thing I did find though is that some members of my club compliment me on my flying and I thought I was a pretty smooth flier. I found I wasn't as smooth as I thought. I'm not saying this to discourage you, just saying that IMAC is a fantastic tool to improve on what you have. I walked away with a multitude of useful information to expand on after just one contest. As a side note, second place went to a small electric Extra that was probably around a 60 inch wing. So to answer your question, electrics are no problem in basic. Do it...you won't regret it.

RE: looking for a 60 size low wing trainer ARF
X2 for the Pulse 60. That was my second plane. Flew it for a year and a half and actually flew the covering off of it. Recovered and flew some more. Loved that plane. I've since moved on to gassers but I had a blast with the Pulse. Good looks, very forgiving and lands like a dream. I might even bring it out of retirement as a back-up or trainer one day.

Depron Survival
Just moved this... I'm sure I'm not the only person that has had this problem: landing a foamy (without landing gear) and damage. I've found that landing with a little speed seems to be easier on the airframe, but from time to time it still happens. It either digs in to the grass/dirt and stops hard or the landing is a little harsh and damage occurs. I hate repairing these things because of the added weight and many repairs changes the flight charistics over time, plus there's the ugly factor. I'm not good enough to catch the plane from a hover yet so I'd love to hear other folks' thoughts on minimizing damage.

Foamtana
Anybody know where I can still get one of these? If not, plans would be a good second choice. I only found one site that has them but for over eighty bucks, a little more than I'd like to spend for a foamy airframe.

All I can say is when I took the tank apart on mine (used airframe) the lines were attached with zip ties and I noticed no signs of deterioration.

Binding Jack
If you have a plane that is frequently flown by others on 2.4, such as my 30% that I'm getting IMAC help with from another club member, instead of taking off the hatch and fighting with the wires on the TX, I plugged the battery into an unused channel and ran an extension from the battery jack to an externally mounted charge jack. Now I can simply insert the binding plug into the charge jack, bind and fly. Makes binding a snap.

GT Power A6 Charger
Just bought one of these and being the non-techie I am, I can't for the life of me figure out how to set this thing for A123/LiFe batteries. I've been through the manual but still can't get there. Anyone have one of these that can get a dummy through the menu?

RE: Giant Scale Batteries
So is A123 a name brand or battery type? In other words if I want A123 technology, do I look for LiFePo, lithium ion, A123 etc? I still don't get it.

Giant Scale Batteries
The more I read on this topic, the more confused I get. I'm ready to get batteries for a 30% Yak and based on recomendations I think A123 is the direction I want to persue. The problem is, from what I can see they aren't usually referred to as A123 when ordering. So the dummy question of the day is, what exactly am I looking for when trying to order A123 packs?

Elevator Links
I'm setting up a 30% Yak (1st gasser) and running into an issue with the elevator links. I'm using Hanger 9 4-40 pro links with ball links, and the longest pro link I can find is 5 inches. Even with the servo turned so the horn is closer to the elevator, 5 inches seems to leave very little thread to screw into the ball links, I'd say around 1/4 inch or so without the plane in front of me (I'm at work, but don't tell anyone). Aside from just using threaded rod, anyone have any thoughts, or does it take very little thread for a solid connection?

RE: Throttle Linkage
Thanks for those pics, very helpful. Looks like you're using CF rod, right? How did you attach the couplings to it? Also, can you elaborate on the diaphragm vent tube? As I'm sure you know, DLE's translation to english leaves a bit to be desired and it's very vague.
