RE: setting up a 6ch radio for tank use
I actually found a v-tail mixer on Radical RC.com for $14... Hobbyking is out of stock on theirs...
ORIGINAL: wayshwing Thanks Maus. That looks like the perfect solution since I already have brushless motors and ESCs.
Hmmm, I just realized that the Sabertooth is designed for brushed motors :( I suppose I could put the brushed motors back in. I'm just feeling like theres a way to get the radio to work correctly..? Maybe wishful thinking...

setting up a 6ch radio for tank use
Hi all, So I am rebuilding an old Hobby Engine 1:6 scale M1 Abrams tank, from the ground up. This is the older "non-suspension" version of the model, but thats okay. I rebuilt the gearboxes to work with 300 size brushless motors and two 30A brushless ESCs. Boxes are much stiffer now, to handle motor and load of metal tracks. I'm using 1:6 scale Tamiya Leopard metal tracks and metal drive wheels (works really great so far). They look exactly like Abrams tracks/wheels. Modified the idler wheels with spacers on the insides, since their "grooves" were too wide for the guide pins on the tracks. I mounted a servo and GWS gyro for the gun barrel altitude (gyro keep barrel level during angled terrain driving). I disabled the gun "firing" and "recoil" mechanism, since I wasn't interested in them. Modified the turret gearbox with a modified servo (rotates 360+ degrees with mod). to turn all the way around. I'm using an HK T6A 6-ch 2.4ghz radio. For those who don't know, the HobbyKing (FlySky) T6A is a 6-ch 2.4ghz radio that uses a PC to program all of the channels (endpoints, dual rates, etc etc) into the radio. So far I've programmed the right stick to control both ESCs; forward drives both tracks forward, right stick stops the right track, left stick stops the left track, and reverse drives both tracks backwards. It kind of works right now, but doing left and right turns causes the active track to speed up while the other track stops. Can't figure out how to fix that? So now I have to set up endpoints for the turret and gun servo channels. Anyone who has programmed a 6ch radio for tank use, I can sure use your insights! I will post some pics soon. Thanks!

RE: venom gpv-1 handling problems
The simple answer is that you are expereincing unbalanced wheels. Now that your able to go fast, the wheels can wobble if they are not balanced. You should remove the wheels and balance them individually. Also be sure the wheels are not loose on their axles. Good luck!

RE: Look what I SCORED today!!!
Great find! Replace that flat pack with a 7.4V Lipo and I guarantee you'll hit some nice wheelies. Hobbyking. com 7.4V 1600mah lipo P/N T1600-2S-20 is a 2 cell 20C pack that drops right into the HOR with little to no modification. This batt will give you crazy ruin time (over 60 minutes) even with the Castle BL motor.

RE: Kyosho hor vid
Hmmm very interesting - much like a slipper clutch in an offroad rc or an onroad ball diff. Not familiar with them since the Kyosho sprocket is directly attached to the rear wheel, much like a real motorcycle. Its tons of fun to gun the throttle out of a turn and watch the rear fishtail a lil bit like a GP bike... Seems like a slipper would prevent this..?

The Anderson looks a lot like the China import RC motos here in the states. For a 1/5 scale I'd look into the european models, and for 1/8 scale Id look at the Venom or the Kyosho HOR (which Im a fan of myself)...

RE: Kyosho hor vid
You say you have a slipper on your swingarm..? I'm not familiar with it, what does it do? I use an aluminum single sided swingarm, which was basically a normal dual sided aluminum unit in which I just cut off the right (non drive side) arm. Voila, instant single sided swingarm for $20. Also I run Venom tires which are MUCH softer than the kyosho ones, so grip is insane and so braking is MUCH enhanced without chattering or locking up with brake. I set up my ESC not for full-on braking as much as just adding a bit of drag when I release the throttle trigger. So basically is I let off throttle, I automatically get ~5-10% braking without ever having to push the trigger forward. Using this setup I have handily gotten "hole-shot" as well as passed many guys at races where they had to modulate their brakes at turns while I just coasted through the corner... the effect is similar in feel to downshifting versus actual braking. Much more controlled.

RE: Hot Racing Forks issue (Kyosho)
Actually grim I found the same gap with the stock forks. Diff is that the stock forks flex inwards slightly while alloy forks dont, so gap is more noticeable. I use thin washers I made out of .010" mylar film to fill in the gaps. Made the OD of the washers smaller than the OD of the bearings so they dont affect bearing spin. Also pay attention to the length of the brass shaft spacer too. Another fix can be to put spacers inside of front wheel between wheel and each disc brake hub. to bring bearings farther outwards. I'm now using Venom wheels front and back, and the issue seems to have gone away. NOte that Venom wheel hubs need to be drilled out to fit kyosho size bearings.

RE: Just got a 1/4 scale brushless dirtbike
Sorry to hear bout your snafu with Hobbyking. I bought a lot of stuff from them. Usually good service although I once bought a $3 lipo balance charger from them that was DOA, and they wanted me to ship the thing back to China! Thats not even worth spending $ to ship! Ive bought TONS of lipo batts from them with zero problems. I've also bought a lot of 450 and 200 size heli kits, servos and ESCs from them too. I use PAYPAL with them and so far no payment issues. I was looking at the 1/4 scale rc moto too. Shipping is a lot but for the whole deal (moto, ESC and 4000mah lipo) will cost less than venom RTR. Plus its a kit so easier to upgrade. PLUS it comes with alloy parts where venom RTR is all plastic. Note that the HK moto and the venom are 1/4 scale, where duratrax is a 1/5 scale bike, so parts are diff size, but you may be able to use venom parts on the HK bike. I run Kyosho 1/8 HORs, and I use venom tires and wheels since they are same scale. Req a lil modifying but easier to source parts than stock kyosho parts. As for metal upgrades on ANY RC - In general what I've learned is this; a chain is as stong as its weakest link. Fixing a broken RC costs time and money. If you upgrade everything to metal, eventually something expensive will break. Use plastic parts strategically, to break instead of breaking a more xpensive part next to it. I learned this from lots of RC buggy racing and RC heli flying (a $2 plastic link is worth breaking instead of the $100 swash assembly its connected to). This goes for RC motorcycles too.

RE: Kyosho NSR 500 Honda Build
Check out my Kyosho HOR moto here on RCUniverse. I run a 5200kv Electrifly BL motor, a 20A Hextronix ESC, a 1600Mah 15C 2S lipo, and a hextronix MG micro servo. I also run Venom tires which are softer and grip better. You can get the ESC and battery from hobbycity.com. The 1600 lipo fits perfectly into the batt compartment. With a 13T pinion, just enough torque to get off the line with a bit of wheelie. Also run an oil shock on rear.

YOKOMO MiniQLO now available in US!
If any of you have ever seen the Yokomo 1:18 MiniQLO, you know this thing rocks the socks off of the Losi Mini. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHHZNJJnpVo&feature=related The 1:18 Yokomo MiniQLO is only available in Japan, when real estate is at a premium, so "table top rock crawling" is all the rage. I know folks who are involved with restarting Yokomo US distributorships. They sell under the name RCTrax. They currently have one person who is slowly offering Yokomo RCTrax MiniQLO on EBay until they get a US website going. They are offering the MiniQLO WITH ESC/servo/motor for just $129! All you need is a receiver, 2S lipo and TX. I used a $43 Eurgle 2.4ghz TX/RX and a Turnigy 2S 400mah 15C lipo ($8). This thing crawls like a 1:10 comp rig. Its really amazing. The Japanese website is http://www.rctrax.net/mq1.html. Email me if you have any questions! Lets get Yokomo back in the USA!

RE: Braking Questions ???
Nano, also keep in mind that you can add mechanical braking to any RC without a 3rd channel/servo. Many nitro RC cars and trucks use the throttle servo for braking as well. Look at the Traxxas TMaxx setup (I used to have one) servo pulls carb linkage in one direction, and in opposite direction the servo actuates braking linkage... Just FYI...

RE: Braking Questions ???
Ive never used 3rd channel braking on my RC motos before but I know how it is done from using it on RC nitro cars and trucks with 3 servos.. You will mix the throttle channel and the brake channel so that they are opposite directions. As the throttle channel moves to a slower speed, the braking channel moves towards applying brake. Note that braking channel curve should be something like 0-0-0-25-85, while throtle curve can be linear 0-25-50-75-100, so that braking doesnt initiate until throttle is almost at 5-10%. Basically braking should not be "on" until the throttle is almost off. Hope this helps!

RE: Kyosho Hor Extinct??
I got my Suzuki kit at www.hobbytron.com I was surprised cause when I looked on their site it didnt show up, but when I searched, they have both the Honda and the Suzuki. This was a month ago, and they had many. Funny cause most shops dont carry the kits anymore. You can also go to Kyosho USA website at www.shopkyosho.com, which also carries the kits. Hope you find them!

RE: looking into bikes now
There are a couple of options... OTO T-528 (electric) 1:8 scale Nuova Faor SF-509 (electric and nitro) 1:5 scale Thunder Tiger makes the Ducati 999 (electric and nitro) 1:5 scale Venom GP1V (electric) 1:8 scale Kyosho NSR500 (electric) 1:8 scale Kyosho Suzuki RGV (electric) 1:8 scale 1:8 scale bikes need a lil less room to run 1:8 scale are more sensitive to bumps and debris, thus 1:5 can run faster 1:5 scale and 1:8 scale have equal stability 1:5 is a lil easier to maintain since theres more room Nitro is noisier, messier, but not necessarily faster Electric with lipo and brushless now have run times similar to nitro I run Kyosho 1:8 bikes with brushless motors and 2S lipos. Very inexpensive, easy to maintain, and dont need too much space.

RE: Help adjusting Honda NSR 500 Electric Motorcycle
1. Make sure that left steering input tilts forks to the right, and vise versa. 2. Do not run the moto without a front wheel weight at all! It will just fall over. Run the stock weight or the Kyosho light wheel weight. 3. Upgrade to Venom medium tires (soft tires if you race). They fit the Kyosho rims perfectly. Run Venom insert in rear tire, use strip of soft gray foam in front tire between wheel weight and tire. 4. Personally I wouldnt add weight to the bike. In fact, adding weight to the bike might overshadow the wheel weight (which acts as a gyro when the wheel spins), reducing the effectiveness of the wheel weight. If you make the overall bike lighter, it will be more stable, as well as faster! 5. Some play in the steering block should not cause the bike to fall. Two of my four HORs have stock plastic steering blocks which are a bit loose after crashes, and they still run and turn fine. Hope this helps.

RE: DuraTrax 1/5 DX450 Brushless On/Off-Road Motorcycle
MicroDan/airshares, I deal with hex bolt/shaft removal as well, when removing the wheel shafts from my Kyosho onroad motorcycle. I use a pair of small diagonal cutters to grab the threads on the shaft, while loosening the bolt on the opposite end. With a bolt on both ends, I can still grab an exposed thread next to the bolt. As for rc motorcycles, everyone who has owned one for awhile (I have run Kyosho bikes since 1993) can tell you that rc bikes experience more vibration and flexing than cars, due to the relative structure (and less mass) of motorcycles versus cars. Same reason why real motorcycles that are raced require safety wired fasteners. Bikes just vibrate a lot more. In general, rc bikes tend to be a bit squirrely compared to rc cars and trucks. I can drive my bikes (I also have a DX450) around a dime pretty easily (maybe not literally, but I can turn them pretty precisely), and got used to the bigger travel of the DX bike, so turning it needs a bit more attention and finesse than road bikes. I let my brother try my DX (he has driven onroad rc cars for 5 years), and he had a hell of a time controlling it. Yes the stock suspension is too soft and bouncy and boingy (which I hate), but like anything else, tweaking/ fixing/ upgrading and modifying are the real "meat" of driving rc models IMO. Driving them around is just icing on the cake.

RE: How to fix dragging lower cowl!
Update! I spent about 2 hours driving on Sunday, which included a few high speed crashes. Aside from the riders arms snapping off at the elbows (yes the crashes were THAT hard and spectacular), the cowl STILL stayed on. The only damage was that my rider had some SERIOUS road rash, which I healed with a little Testors paint. Also one of the crash bars got a little tweaked (also a testament to how spectacular the crashes were). http://www.youtube.com/user/EliteXpression#p/a/u/1/90bQAmtpKrI

RE: RC Bike Racing in Nor Cal
Thanks Stubby, Is this at the parking lot of Mission College? I see guys running 1:4 scale onroad cars there. Personally I run my Kyosho nearby the college, on Fredom Circle. It is a public street in an industrial area which has virtually no traffic on weekends. Its the only place I found that is smooth enough to run full throttle without smashing into a rock, although there are reflectors along the center of the road. How about the parking lot at Oracle in Great America Pkwy and 237? The 1:8 bikes are definitely sensitive to rocks and sticks, but theyre' small enough that you don't need a huge space to race. Let (us) know when and where and I'll make my way out there...
