RE: Best Kv Choice for Easy Glider E with stock Gearbox?
ORIGINAL: aeajr I typically use outrunners in my gliders. I think I am using 1200 to 1400 kV outrunners in my 1.5 to 2M glidres spinning 8-12'' props. I will be putting up a 3M next season and will probably use something in the 600-800 kV range to run a bigger prop. It is the prop size and amp draw that drives my selection of the kV range of the motor. I target between 70 and 100 W/pound for my power to weight ratio. I am looking for climb, not speed. I don't need a rocket. I look to get to about 500-700 feet in about 20-40 seconds. On a typical 2M glider I want about a 9-12'' prop, roughly. On the 3M glider I will probably target an 12-16'' prop. Not sure exactly yet. Webocalc is a great tool to do some ''what iffs'' with or without a gearbox. Put in the numbers and play with the combinations till you get the combo you want in terms of prop size, amps, watts, thrust, etc. You can look at trade-offs between voltage and amps. Between kV and prop size. http://flbeagle.rchomepage.com/software/webocalc_1.05/html/webocalc_imperial.html A very useful tool.
Thanks for the very useful info and web tools for calculating the power plant. I use Drive Calculator for my non glider work-ups, but always open to new tools. I like the idea of your "70 and 100 (Kv) W/pound for my power to weight ratio" formula; just some rough paper calc scribblings of my heavier planes seems to bear this out. I found out thanks to a reply email (finally) from Multiplex DE that the Easy Glider E's gearbox is a 3:1 (30T main and 10T pinion), so I've revised my Brushless Inrunner choice to the Turnigy 2835 - 2700Kv (same as I used in my EZ* w/o gearbox and 5x5 prop) which, through the stock gearbox delivers as reduced output of 900Kv and about 225 - 250watts depending on prop. I'll use the calc tools to choose the appropriate prop with the 2850 mAh 2S LiPO I will use. I hope to make the EZ G E a great Soarer, but also a nice "warm+ liner" that will do some Glider style Acro. Thanks again.

I got mine, a press fit and glue (Locktite gear glue - "Green") at a LHS, and it was a close out from a EF Helicopter line, $1.85USD. The last one. You should probably Google "10T pinion 3.17 shaft" and you'll get a good hundred returns, perhaps even some in Euro. Here are some US deadlers http://www.aero-nuts.com/product_info.php?products_id=321 Nice because it has a set screw, not glue needed http://www.readyheli.com/RevCo_Hard_One_0_5M_Hardened_Pinion_Gear_3_17m_p/ho-0500h.htm set screw and best looking, price is higher http://www.twenga.co.uk/dir-Toys-Games,Model-making,Model-pinion (UK) http://store.rcsupersales.net/servlet/-strse-4346/Rhino-Gear-Hardened-Steel/Detail Let us know how your's works out. Best Kv Choice for Easy Glider E with stock Gearbox?
Just getting into powered (E) gliders after some years with unpowered Slope Gliders and a couple years of E powered planes. I know my way around brushless motors and gearboxes, but not that combination in "E" gliders. I picked the MPX Easy Glider E as my first foray into a medium sized 4ch plane. I bought the Kit version and I'm one to immediately do lots of mods and of course toss the anemic Brushed motor in favor of a much more efficient Brushless power train. I have an EZ* which I did the same and tossed the same Permax 400 and put in a Turnigy C2835-2700 (Kv) Inrunner mounted right into the stock motor pod, wires thru the fuse and the ESC inside the cockpit (air ducting cooling added). I want to reuse the stock EzG E Gearbox, which I'v calculated is 3.5:1 ratio (35T main gear and 10T pinion). A Turnigy C2835 type Inrunner Brushless will bolt right up to it and I've already found a 3.2mm 10T Pinion of the right pitch for the Turnigy's. My question is: What "effective" Kv (after Gearbox output) is best suited for a EzG E running the stock prop? Also, in general for powered gliders (not "hotliners") of any type including balsa/plywood buildup, what is the consensus for preferred motor Kv to use? Lower Kv (under 1000) or higher Kv (1200 and above)?

RE: which on board camera
While your AeroCam Lite looks exactly like the generic MP-10 "Gum Cam", the LED designations (video and mic icons) aren't the same, in fact the MP-10 with 4GB doesn't even have icons. On the MP-10, the left LED is green for Power, the Center is Orange for Ready and Charge Condition, and the right LED is a blue indicating Video with Audio is starting and also Unit is Charging. Yours seems to be more like the unit Grayson Hobby over-charges for with less internal Flash RAM (only 2GB). They have a have a how to use chart on the site. Apparently the Chinese manufacturer will make various versions of this DV camera with different operating methods. Good luck

As usual, Grayson is a big rip-off, you can buy the same "gum pack" DV-cam in 4GB on-board Flash RAM right from the authorized distributor in Red China for $29.95 + $6ish bucks air-mail shipping. But beware, the "chinglish" manual is unintelligible. You'll have a laugh trying to read it, but you won't figure out much. Fortunatley, my wife is Taiwanese and reads Mandarin, so we've deciphered most of it from the simplified Chinese instructions. [link=http://www.lightinthebox.com/640x480-High-Resolution-4GB-built-in-memory-Spy-Gum-Camera-XH-4292Hidden-Camera-CC-01-_p53042.html]Light in the Box[/link] I'm planning a thread on how to use this camera for RC Heli and Plane use. Basic important specs are 640 x 480, 1.3MP CMOS sensor, 20 - 25 fps, 2 or 4GB onboard Flash ($23.95 or $29.95) + slot for Micro SD card. Video format is AVI. Charging it is a nightmare and I've had problems getting some Windows XP PC's to read the device, it loves Vista powered PC's. They claim that it is Mac compatible, but that is BS. I've tried the MP10 camera on 6 different Mac OS X machines (10.3 thru 10.5) at our Audio / Video editing business and none see the MP10. For the cost, the video is spectacular, far better than a Flip Video camera - which is very pixelized and has terrible color scaling; and it's on par with the FlyCamOne2 for half the price and especially the weight. I uploaded a screen capture from some first time video I shot with the cam attached to my brushless MPX EasyStar from about 1/2 mile up with the camera mounted in the canopy looking over the nose.

They probably have been fed up for years with companies like Hitec, Castle, BlueBird, GWS, Corona, etc. taking away their business of selling extra receivers; it's the Inkjet Printer replacement cartridge thing of RC radios. Pretty sneaky, I'd say. And if a few "compatibles" do come along eventually though, I can only see Futaba of all of the companies, being able to afford a "Bigger Gorilla" law firm, like HP and Canon has, to sue the "copy cats". So maybe there is some hope in the future. Till then though, I'm not loosening my grip exclusively on my cheaper to use and buy more RXes 72Meg radios. Besides, with all the fad buying of the spread spectrum radios in my area, I'm finding I have more private use of the whole 72 band 8^ )) On a side note - I'm hearing from a few of my fellow glider flyers that have switched to 2.4 of various brands, that they are complaining of shorter range with certain 2.4 radios than they got with their 72's. Airtronincs, JR and Spektrum in particular have been named as poor distance performers. Have you heard or experienced this?

RE: RDS 8000 vs Futaba 7C
Well this has nothing to do with the question I posted. FYI - I have a RD8000, which the RDS8000 is identical to in all the programming features, and guess what. I can and do "independently adjust the throws of the ailerons if you're running dual aileron servos". The differential for two independent aileron servos is set by percentage and has been on ALL Airtronics programmable radios, even the 6ch model!! The only flaw in the Airtronics RD and RDS models is no rudder dual rates! So I have no idea what you are talking about or what you claim you heard. Do you even have a RD8000 or RDS8000 to speak from first person experience??? But lets get back the the original subject of the posting ... or don't bother to post (especially if you don't know first hand what you are talking about).

RE: RDS 8000 vs Futaba 7C
Hey guys, anyone making a fully compatible "after-market" spectrum receiver for with the Airtronics RDS or Futuba spectrum radios??? I use 72MHz radios, have been since my last HAM band died some 20+ years ago. I have many - 6 Hitecs and 3 Airtronics (2 Vanguard 6ch and a one year old RD8000, which I love to fly with) and one Futaba. I've also got a strong collection of 30 to 35 receivers from various major brands, mostly after-market brands that match either - or + or are auto-switching. ALL were very cheap in comparison to the VERY high cost of spectrum receivers. And that is the crux of why I haven't switched to 2.4GHz, as much as I'd like to buy a RDS8000 - I have too many 72 RXes, they are dirt cheap even for high quality and 2.4 RXes are over-priced. Are there any after-market spectrum receivers fully compatible with Airtronics or anyone of the major brand spectrum radios? Will there ever be Corona, BlueBird, Hitec compatibles at near 72's prices? Till then, there is no prying my fingers from all my 72's.

Any "compatible" 2.4GHz Receivers available for Airtronics, or other?
I know that I am not the last 72'er left and I doubt that my reasons for staying with 72MHz radios is unique; but two of the major reasons are - 1) I have too many great 72MHz Rx'es to just toss, and 2) Spectrum Receivers are too damn expensive. I do have and love processor based radios, I have several 72 Hitec's and Airtronics, my last new one a RD8000. But 72MHz receivers from major and reliable brands are dirt cheap (just bought 4 Ultra-ultra light weight 4ch Auto-Switching Corona's for Depron and EPP EP 3D and combat planes, for $14 BUCKS New!! 6ch were only $19! Now I've seen a few references to supposedly "compatible" spectrum receivers on primarily Hong Kong sites (one I'm sure you know who I'm refering to) but frankly didn't bother investigating considering the source. Are there any 100% compatible "after market" 2.4 spectrum receivers out there? Who are they compatible with? What do they cost comparatively and has anyone had experiences with them? In other words - WHO WHAT WHERE!!?? I'm particularly partial to my Airtronics RB8000 72, and if there are any compatible 2.4 RXes available for the RDS8000, that's where I'd like to go. Or, is this not likely to ever happen (after market cheap compatible RXes like we have for 72MHz)? And why? (If that's the case, I'll never switch ..... but then again, thank you to all those that switch, I like having the 72 band all to myself.) My wallet is ready .... if.

I've had one of these Mystery "B6" multi battery type digital charger / dischargers for almost a year now and you can ignore the bad mouthing of the sad sacks above who probably never used, let alone ever saw one. The same goes for Mystery LiPO's; I've got many 3S from 1300mAh to their newest 2800mAh 30C (35C for 15seconds) Mystery batts and never had a puff or one that was appreciably below stated specs. I have two Orange 2200mAh 25C 3S that are just rebranded Zippy H models (cut away the outer shrink wrap). My two 1500mAh 20C's are Zippy's too. But to your question, I've never found the mysterious (pun intended) software or interface that the USB I/O is intended to use. Software and some drivers are certainly needed to make it work. If anyone hears of any, please post the link here. And BTW for the nay sayers, THIS is exactly the same charger as many you see on sites with well known brands who charge nearly three times what I paid for it from HK - $39.95 + $5 shipping. Some examples EXACTLY the same - Hobby City's "Accucell-6", Hitec's "Multicharger LN-5014", Global Hobby "Prodigy II Propeak" just reboxed, and here's a killer - "iC6 LiPlus Intelligent Digital Balance Charger" again just reboxed, at Hobby Lobby for a modest $75.90 with all the same plugs and accessories mine came with for $39.95! I was not in NH (too freakin cold); but writing for them from my location in the "Silicon Cereal Bowl", Frisco - the land of Flakes, Nuts and Fruits (cereal bowl, old joke). I belonged to the Homebrew Computer club out at Stanford, after getting out of the Air Force and Nam, so I was in the middle of everything going on in the fast lane. I used to write stories later on a TRS-80 model 100 portable and I still have it. The first REAL "laptop" computer, fit in my briefcase. Mac have always been and always will be toys. I used to love Apple computers, had an Apple I and then sold it because it was too limited ('77 I think). Had a couple others like the TRS-80 desk top, then bought a new Apple ][e - FIRST mass produced "American" computer to be OUT SOURCED (Canada and then Taiwan). Ya, Apple the great "American Computer Company", also the first to out source. I loved that ][e Pro and still have it too. Even have the "mouse option" and the CP/M card. Now Macs are Chinese Sweatshop junk. Always buy Apple Care, because like "toys", they rarely last beyond the standard warranty without problems. I've had 4 Macs in recent years that all died in one form or another between 1 month to 8 months after the warranty lapsed. That is the big secret that the paid off Apple Hacks in the media never write about. One G3 iBook I had, had to been repaired by Apple FIVE TIMES (three Logic Boards and two LCD's) in two and one half years. Thank god I bought Apple Care on that one. This why I love RC. When, and it will break .... it's because I crashed it!

I've seen a few discussions on this topic, the maximum length that the wire between a brushless motor and ESC can be. I'm looking for a concrete answer, based on REAL electronics engineering fundamentals, not old wives tales (don't tell my wife I said that). Some model planes, especially Glow to Electric conversions just don't allow for putting the ESC within a standard wire length (as delivered with the motors and ESC), so can distances like 9", 12" 15", 20" be acceptable? Can changing the wire guage size conpensate for longer distances? Would love answers from the Forums Electronics Engineers, state your MS of EE origin or IEEE Certificate :^) Seriously.

RE: Guan-LI Thunderbird Power Glider- HELP
Congratulations, you've been conned into buying another piece of crap from either RaidenTech, NitroPlanes, BananaHobby, or any of about a dozen other AKA's for the same company in City of Industry (LA) California. (they all have the same or similar phone number.)

RE: BANANA HOBBY planes ?
Ditto what ricardinho above said. I've bought from two of their many AKA's (RaidenTech, NitroPlanes, Xheli, HobbyPartz, etc etc etc .... 15 and still counting), notice they all have the same or similar contact phone numbers and operating times. They lie like rugs on the flight capabilities and specs for their models. They've been caught using demo videos posted on YouTube that were of very modified planes (I was involved with one, a Brushless modified A-10 because the stock one couldn't even take off!) I've bought a A-10, FW-190 and a ME-109 ... NONE of which could even fly safely in stock form! 'nuff said.
