It's not the GRRT, but thier q-500 motor that does have the head you can turn, and I turned it to rear exhaust. Macs header and pipe. I tried to get some pics up but they won't load.

RE: MVVS and Viper
Hey guys thanks a lot, I just need to get it in the air and see I guess. It still has a little breaking in to do as well so I am just going to take it easy for a little while. I figure said and done it will end up around 18,000 with that prop. I know it's not going to get near a nelson jett or profi, can't wait to get one of those but this is what I have for now. Just for fun. And by the way 18,300 - 18,700 is freakin impressive out of that TT .40. That a macs tuned pipe or a performance specialties muffler?

MVVS and Viper
Hey guys, quick question. I have an MVVS rear exhaust q-500 .40 engine on a tuned pipe, Just got it broken in, and put a 9 x 6.5 apc pylon prop on it. Started cutting down the header to tune the pipe, and it went from 16000 to 17,800, and thats the best I got. I was thinking that I would get a little bit more, I have an 8 x 8 apc that I could try, but I didn't know if that would be the best prop plane combo, it's on a viper. I know that with some engine / plane / prop combos you can have a screamin prop but its just not right for the airframe. And if I change props, don't I have to re-tune the pipe? Not that thats a problem but it seems like you would have to. If an 8 x 8 is what will work then I am game for that, I just think this engine should do more. Thanks for the help!

A friend of mine and I just got a pair of these. I'm going to put an os 25 max with a tuned pipe on mine.

RE: High speed
To do that your best bet is a Hot and high end engine and an inexpensive airframe like a diamond dust or something of the like. But 200 is gonna be a hard one to tap on a low low budget. If you like to design your own stuff it's a little different story, Thats what I like to do. The most important thing is a super clean airframe with high attention to detail, thats what cranks out the MPHs, I don't care how good your engine is.

RE: Oakdale Aircraft Phenom
Thats a nice plane. It really is moving along well with that engine I would imagine it will scream with a hot one. Not to bash, but heres just a small design mod that I think should be made. The cowling should continue all the way back to the tail and down to a point, that would reduce massive amounts of drag. But overll that is a great looking plane and looks like it will really perform thanks for all the hard work.

color scheme designs
Hey I just thought I would ask and see who thought it would be a good idea to make a thread that was strictly for color scheme layouts for our planes. A good paint/covering job can make the difference between your plane blending with the rest of the crowd and a showstopper no matter what the type of plane is. It would give the guys who like to do that stuff a place to showcase thier art and the people who may not be so handy at it good ideas. What do you think?

RE: Trash Planes
I have rebuilt several crashed and "wrecked" planes before as well. A buddy of mine has taken planes that I considered toast, that were really bad off and next thing you know its ready to cover. I guess it depends on how much you want to do. It's also nice on a college budget/ time schedual. Works great. I always like to throw a little kit bashing in there as well, like taking an ugly stick and making well... not so ugly : )

The top one is awesome, now all you need for the bottom one is set of "spinna" rims for your raceplane. And perhaps some fuzzy dice and a cane!

Thanks, I think designing them is half of the fun. Getting an engine in and then building a plane strictly one off for it is what I like to do the most. That 60lx seems to be the best thing for what I want to do as well.

RE: all diamond dust post
Well the MVVS engines that both of us wil be running are pretty hot, their not just your stock sport engines. On top of that there will be mods made to do some performance upgrades. From what I have been told and seen firsthand these engines respond great to enhancements, it really is a good base for a high performance engine that is made very well. The only thing is I'm having trouble trying to decide if I should do everything I want to it before I even break it in or just take it easy for a while and slowly tweak on it to see improvements. I saw a guy that took a pretty hot MVVS .26 and turn it into an absolute monster, and there is a GRRT at the field that packs about as much punch as you are gonna get without getting into the nelson/jett arena so I know it can be done. I'm not saying this as to gloat, just mentioning that I think they have a lot of potential due to the quality of the engine. Also I'd like to see some more videos of some of the Dusts if you guys know where any are, I am having a hard time finding them.

RE: all diamond dust post
I was contemplating the venturi as well for a couple of reasons. For one I didn't get this engine to fly it at half throttle, it's strictly for speed, and it will also make it much easier to cowl the front end as well. That is a quick mod that should spark some modest improvement. Before breaking this engine in, do you think 24,000 is too much to ask from it? I dont think it will be a problem, it's just that I always break them in according to what RPM the engine will spend it's time and dont know these engines well.

RE: Prop. Dia vs Pitch
What you re doing yes you will want a larger diameter propeller but I wouldn't get too terribly low on the pitch. I have a super stearman with a saito .56 that works beautifully with a 12x6, but doesn't fly with half of the performance if I put like a 13x4. Just play with the larger diameter props in the recommended range for that engine, dont get too radical or it'll start doing weird stuff. If you get the prop too flat it'll actually lose torque. It's a matter of what prop works best for that airframe so just experiment with a few in the upper range and pick the one that feels the best. You will have PLENTY of power and torque with that plane engine combo so you should be good to go. Remember, Larger diameter = more torque ( like hover, or like 1st gear in a car) smaller diameter = speed ( like 6th gear on a car). Hope this helps.

I was also thinking it would be a lot of fun also to make a cowling, that would actully be a " fuselage" for this plane, that I could easily remove and put back on just to see how much of a real difference I can make by cleaning up all of the stuff hangin out.

RE: all diamond dust post
I was thinking (and hoping) I was on the right track. This engine is not of course a nelson but by-golly it's pretty dang stout. I am looking to get into the 24,000 range I think that is feasable with a little tweaking.

RE: Prop. Dia vs Pitch
I personally like to think of props as gearing and waht you want to do with it. A larger diameter prop with less pitch is going to give you more torque than a small diameter that has a lot of pitch which is going to give you more speed. This is where your airframe comes into play. Say theoretically you have a piper cub with an OS .40, you will run an 11x5 propeller for good torque and pull at a lower (relative) RPM. Put the same exact engine on a diamond dust and you will prop it with say a 9x6 to get those high rpms where it will do you good, that airframe will "allow" that prop and engine to do what it needs to, make sense? You wouldnt put a ferrari rear end in a dump truck would you? Thats just personally how I approach it. Your engine is going to make the same amount of power in different places per say.

RE: all diamond dust post
Thanks that helps. Why were you only getting 115 out of the GRRT though? For some reason that doesn't sound right at all. There is a guy at our field that had dust with that same engine, and it was well in the 160 range very very easily if not more. I have the MVVS q-500 thats never been run, and I am turning it to rear exhaust and I am expecting some impressive results. I thought an 8x8 would be an appropriate place to start looking for good results am I way off here?

Thanks CP that makes sense and I may give it a shot. I have a couple of other planes that it may be good to do that on as well. Smchale your dust looks nice and I like the little one. I have an ops .21 thats perfect for that but its for the other speed plane. Both of them look great though thanks for the pics. Will I be able to run a straight header pipe like that or did you put in a bladder tank?

Those are both great ideas that I was already wondering about, I like to really shave things down. And I will look into the carbon fiber pushrods. CP I have a drawing I need to send to you sometime of a plane that I designed just for this engine that you might like, it is much like the " speed cup " planes. And when you are making the one shot cowling you said you are just using CA to do it? How do you keep from melting the foam? Or do you just use foam safe? A cowling was the first thing that I thought I thought of when I knew I may be getting one, thats a good idea.
