RE: Kress Jets
Hello, Morris, and good luck to you in the Kress venture. What I am curious about is that I recall an advertisement years ago for an upgraded fan unit for the Rossi .91 called the Boss 601. Does anyone here remember the item, who it was made by, and can I get one somewhere? The ad stated (I think) that it was a replacement upgrade for the Byron Originals F-16 of the time. Perhaps 1977 or so. I have a line on an original kit, unbuilt, with said Rossi powerplant, that I might pick up soon, and the upgraded fan unit would be a nice addition.

Fahim, my dad and I are going to make a photo-trip sometime next week, as he and I talked about this when he caught me posting. He takes pretty good detail pics, and when I show him what we all are looking for here, I think you will find them very useful. Sorry about your luck with the covering job; Doo-Doo happens. Keep us posted; I'm very interested in this project because most of the scale efforts I've seen have had a few innaccuracies. I'd like to think that we all aspire to the mastery of Dave Platt, et al, who have dominated scale competitions for years.

Fahim, if you will kindly show us a pic of the nose gear installation, or (proposed) cavity, I think I can get you some pics to help with the scale location. If I remember right, there is also a radome mast very nearby the nosegear well, so it would do you well to check it out for scale accuracy. If I can get the time this weekend, I'll go see, and post pics if I can get them. Wolfy888

Fahim, it's post #721, from TonyA, on page 29 of the string. He also showed some tech orders I haven't seen before, but the ones I used are the last two sheets. Hope you find this of use.

RE: A10 Warthog IMAA legal size from Wowplanes
Most of the MFR's have a "Green Camoflage" paint scheme available - it's close, but inaccurate. Look in a string here for "A-10 warthog for $95"; it's way early in the string, and someone posted the original technical order that we used to determine what color went where. I've lost my copies over the years, so it was a real surprise to see that. There are two shades of green, and one of a dark grey, and then all the tech markings in flat black. The paint we used was a (then) classified two-part epoxy that was formulated to reject radar signals - pretty neat stuff for the time. I remember it stank like hell for about two days. Anyway, the tech order that appears in the string I mentioned is the real one - I'd never forget it, because I had to look at it every time before loading the spray guns.

RE: soldering question
What Etep said! Listen, a good connection depends on the CLEANLINESS of the metal, so flux is always a good idea. Rosin-core solder is an absolute MUST for electronics work, as it cleans the joint as the LEAD and TIN bond to the COPPER. Does this make things clear? When dissimilar metals are brought into close proximity, they have a tendancy to produce electrolysis, which ultimately corrodes the copper, which is the softest one. Cleaning and sealing the solder joint will prevent this from happening. O.K.?

RE: A10 Warthog IMAA legal size from Wowplanes
LOoking good so far, Fahim. If I can lay hands on my dad's digital camera, we have an A-10 on display here at Warbird park, on the former AFB. Tell me what you need pics of, a nd I'll try to get them for you. This one, MB 097, I have personally painted twice, but the paint on it now is from a professional refitting company, so it's gloss, and doesn't exactly match the TEC order that I painted them from, but it's close enough to the original "Lizard scheme" that we did. The engines are gone, of course, and the canopy has been blacked-out, but the airframe is in pretty good shape for a public location. Especially useful to you might be the landing gear pics, since most folks don't know that the nose gear is far offset to the right side, in order to clear the gun. Talk to me.

That's a good call; lower RPM will have a more scale sound and will probably pull a lot better; deisels load well and don't tend to overheat, to my understanding. Please tell me if what I've heard is wrong, because I have a shot at getting my paws on a PAW, and I'm curious.

RE: Whats a good Transmitter/Reciever
Tower Hobbies is selling its own brand of radio, which is actually a Futaba system on 72mhz for $112. It's the six-channel system, and only differs from the Futaba by having a rotary knob for flaps, instead ofa bat switch. It's a great system for starters, and has enough bells and whistles that you probably won't outgrow it too soon.

RE: Beginner A-10???
A good friend of mine just started in the hobby, and he bought a Mini-Telemaster. It seems to be an excellent trainer, slow and responsive, so that would be my choice. Long ago, when I was teaching pilots, I recommended the Sig Kadet, but electrics were a far away dream then, and the only choice was nitro. Myself, I was young and brave (read stupid) and my first trainer was a Falcon 56 with a Fox .40. I had to learn about control real fast, so pick a high wing like the aforementioned craft. They have a good reputation.

RE: A10 Warthog IMAA legal size from Wowplanes
I like it. When I moved to Myrtle Beach, SC in the late '70's, the AFB here was still operational, and the first job I had was sanding and painting the 72 A-10's stationed there, so it has always had a special place in my heart. It's on heckuva tough bird, and I sure wouldn't want to be on the wrong end of that GE gatling cannon. Depleted uranium shells can do some awesome damage. Also, you forgot to mention that the pilots like it because the titanium bathtub surrounding them makes for a (relatively) safe combat environment. Several of my buddies swear by its durability, and none of them have returned with gunshot injuries from ground fire. I'm looking forward to build updates, and may order a kit before long. Keep 'em coming, and good luck!

RE: Beginner A-10???
I bought the Guanli A-10 before they upgraded the motors to BL, and am still in the process of changing them out, but I've heard that the newer version flies pretty well. Olwarbirds advice is right on the money; heli's are a different breed, and the control functions may confuse you. Get a cheap trainer and fly it around 'til you get bored before you pull the trigger on an EDF; they can be a real b**** sometimes because jets just don't like to fly slow.

O.K., I tried the AP Wasp; like all of you said, it SUX! Won't stay running off the lighter, and doesn't make RPM like the test stand did. What gives? I'm going to order a TT .7 and see what that does. Meantime, the 150-ish is just about ready for maiden. O.S..15 should be enough power to make it go.

Sand, sand, sand. All of Guillows balsa is heavy, and the plans tend to overbuild, so lighten everything you can. Your PAW should move it out quite nicely, and post pics if you can.

RE: GWS F-15 advice
That's what I heard - lots of wing, good power system and no need for cheater holes. I'm just concerned about takeoff run - I have about 100' of useable pavement, and then its grass, or an immediate left turn (maybe 20 degrees or so) but on takeoff, anything can happen, y'know, and I don't want to bend it before I get to impress the neighbors on the fairway. I'm looking at a 3s 3350 from tower, for about $90, but am going to look further tonight to see what else is around. any suggestions?

Thanx for the input, Sky; I'll do some research on batts vs. cost and let you know. 3300Mah? That sounds a bit hot. Had considered a 4s 14.8v pack but was told that the 40A ESC's I'm using won't tolerate it. Where is RysiuM when you need him? I'm actually a nitro guy, and this is my first real go at lekkies, but was told this is a good flying jet, so I'd like to see it last a while.

GWS F-15 advice
Hi, guys: Just bought and assembled the GWS F-15, has 64mm fans and is powered with 2200mah 15c lipo, all seems to be running well, makes good thrust and balances at the indicated CG. Any advice on the maiden flight? I don't want to try a hand launch because in past experiences, you cannot generate enough airspeed to continue flight. I've given some thought to a catapult, but am not quite sure how to build one. any ideas? The problem is that while I have a great flying space, I don't have enough pavement for ROG. Talk to me, Goose!

Airframe completed, and Balsarite-ed, so now it's down to color scheme. Covering is pretty easy, so flight pics should be coming shortly. She's a darn fine-looking bird, even without feathers. My buddy has produced a digital camera, so we'll post pics in the next day or so. I think the O.S. .15 is a good choice; she ought to be just about ballistic with that kind of power available. I'll let y'all know.

I took your advice and settled on an O.S. LA .15, and I think that will do what I want as far as a sporty trainer goes. I've had several O.S. powerplants in the past, and they have a good reputation, so I don't forsee any real problems. The addition of flaps on a model this size is a new adventure, and I'll post results here later.

Now I've spotted the Thundertiger .10 on sale for $49.95 + s&h, and it looks to be the one for the 150-ish, which has a modified wing and flaps. The plan is to have a reliable trainer for me and the kids, not too outrageous, but reasonably speedy in manoeuvers (british spelling) and will slow to a walk for approaches and landings. .10, .12, .15 sized powerplants are under consideration. The plane sports a 36" wingspan with a fat semi-symmetrical airfoil, and depending on engine choice, should weigh in the neighborhood of 20-25 oz. Talk to me, Goose!

My thought is to cut off as much as possible while leaving enough so that the head doesn't distort under torque.
