RE: Looking for builds that show Carbon rods driving multiple flaps?
I did use bushings at both ends, you can see on my BUSA N28 thread on RCSB. A friend machined bushings for me and neat joiners that allowed the wings to decouple easily. Using multiple servos can work also, the trade offs are weight and cost vs easier setup. SmartFly makes units like matchboxes called Equalizers for this exact purpose. Whit

RE: Looking for builds that show Carbon rods driving multiple flaps?
Mike, One thought, I tried to use carbon rods as torque tubes to run my N28 ailerons and found that carbon tubes allowed too much twist. I had to go to aluminum arrow shafts which worked great. You could then Hysol G10 control horns on the ail arrows haft and it should work fine. Whit

RE: Did you dull your shinny covering
The above photo is a BH Models F4u which had an Ultracote "Corsair Blue" shiny covering before getting some flat Lustrecote sprayed on it. BTW, the markings, except the cowl checkers, are white and red Lustrecote paint as well. Markings first, then clear coated. Pic by Bill S at JN 2013. Whit

RE: Vanessa c.g. Rig: How to.
I was always taught to balance with an empty fuel tank, assuming that the tank is forward of the CG. That way you will never burn off enough fuel to move the CG to an unstable position. The plane is at least correctly balanced or slightly nose heavy. Whit

RE: Vanessa c.g. Rig: How to.
Try it! I'm not being facetious, I was unsure of the rig until I made one and then started testing. Take a plane with a known and trusted CG and put it on the rig, then move the ropes around. As long as the ropes are bracketing the CG, moving them will not change the indicated CG point. If you don't bracket the CG, the plane will not be supported and will fall! Whit

RE: Military colors only at warbird meets?
Some of the "L" series of airplanes did have guns, BIG guns, they just were off shore on ships... Hey, if it can call in a salvo of 16" shells from an Iowa class battleship, it's tough to think of it as "unarmed." Yes, it's really stretching a point. Whit

RE: Military colors only at warbird meets?
For me it's less important that it be the right color scheme than it be a scale subject well modeled. I'd accept a well done 1/5 scale scratch built Miss America but a bashed ugly stick or similar would be outa line and would bother me. I fly a Sig 1/4 Cub in an NE-1 Navy three color scheme that I added stenciled markings over the air brushed camo ans weathered it and consider that a warbird and fly it at WOD and at Rhinebeck proudly, but my RAF camoed UltraSport 1000 I have never tried to fly at any warbird meet and would expect (even hope) someone to challenge me on it if I did. We cut out the "Mission" events at Rhinebeck 10 years ago (approx) to much anger by some because we were getting more and more small Eindecker or Taube sorta scales and losing the high quality large scale models. No one wanted to risk their 1/3 scale DVII in a mid air with 4 $100 eindeckers zooming around. The decision paid off and the number of large scale, up to 1/2 scale, high quality models has increased dramatically. I would think someone else could decide to run a "mission" only event and that it would do well and that too would be a good thing. To each his own. Whit

RE: Old Rhienbeck Aerodrome on the 8th
Thanks for that Doc, we do it for the love of the people and the place, 46 years going, not a bad record. I'd like to give three cheers for the Aerodrome staff. They are in a tough business in a tough economy and they are out there every weekend they can volunteers for the vast part and trying to keep a dream alive. They have had a hard time of it due to the weather last year and this, wouldn't hurt to hit their website and join as a sponsor at whatever level, or get a gizmo, book or bit of clothing from their store. I've got twin 19 month olds I'd like to have a chance to see the show someday. Whit

Tom, We were glad to have you as always and sorry for the tough breaks, maybe you need to finish that DVIII up and bring it, stop bringing these older planes? That reasoning is silly but I want to see your gorgeous DVIII fly so.... Thanks again for coming and I really hope to see you next year! PS, met with Warren the CD today and found out we had 106 modelers register over the three days, not bad in a hurricane Whit

RE: Old Rhienbeck Aerodrome on the 8th
Thanks for those wonderful pics! The weather was less of a factor than we had expected, only Sat afternoon was effected. No damage to anything from the high winds Sat night, we tucked planes away in the hangers and removed the tent covers and came back Sunday AM to just about the best weather possible. I think we got bypassed from any severe stuff. I would have liked just a little more wind down the runway on Sunday as my DR1 flies better in a light headwind but hard to complain about less wind. Pilot turnout was a bit below average but tough to know as some folks came for Wednesday to Sat afternoon and then packed up and left while others showed up for Sunday. The quailty of the models was outstanding and seeing the new BUSA planes fly was excellent, plus a few new Glenn Torrance Models planes showed up. I have a BUSA 1/3 DVA in my build list, just awaiting the kit release! Thanks to all that made the trip, including Doc Geezer who drove 1730 miles in 26 hours from Houston TX to fly his 1/3 BUSA N28. What dedication! Whit See you all for the 47th edition next year

RE: Old Rhienbeck Aerodrome on the 8th
I don't think we have ever canceled the Jamboree due to weather. This year is no exception. Club members mowed and raked the field today, and set up tents etc. BUSA is already here as are modelers from Wisconsin, Florida and Texas. We got in a few flights this evening under clear and sunny skies. NOAA shows some chance of rain Sat evening, but that has not stopped the club or our "usual suspects." Club members and modelers will complete setup tomorrow am and start flying around noon, sooner if we can clear the field of cars and trailers. Hope to see you there! For a list of vendors at this years event see www.mhrcs.com/pages/Jamboree.htm Whit

RE: Old Rhienbeck Aerodrome on the 8th
Thanks for the enthusiasm Tom! Rhinebeck is what it is partly due to the place and it's history, but mostly due to the attendees. We have a very loyal following that go the extra mile to make the event and bring true works of art that fly. Thanks to all of you. MHRCS wil be on the field Wednesday, weather permitting, to cut grass and erect tents etc. we start at 10am. Extra hands with rakes, weed wackers or lawn mowers are welcome. We'll also be replacing some of the " bleachers," so anyone who can lift a board can be of service. MHRCS is committed to making the Aerodrome facilities better every year and this is one of the times we do. We usually have a lunch and fly a bit once we are done, come join the "fun!" Pls note that tents erected prior to our mowing may need to be moved, darn hard to mow under a set-up tent! Whit

RE: Old Rhienbeck Aerodrome on the 8th
Yes, most folks either lower their tents over them for the night, or just drag them down to the hangers and tuck them in with the Aerodromes planes. As many planes brought are replicas of ones on site it looks like the planes have had children. Whit

RE: Old Rhienbeck Aerodrome on the 8th
Hi, I'm one of the MHRCS club members running the event, so I'd be happy to answer. We start setting up the field on Wednesday, cutting the grass and setting up tents, so modelers can be on the field then but need to wait until we have everything mowed before they can pick flight line spots and setup tents. From then on the field is available but you need to check with aerodrome personnel prior to driving on the field. It IS a working airport! Staying on the road between the two white safety fences once you are at that part of the field beyond the tower is highly recommended. Friday am we start further setting up and most modelers start arriving then. We usually start the event informally around 1 PM on Friday but modelers can still arrive and setup throughout the day, again staying between the white fences whenever possible. there is a trailer storage area on the field and most modelers park them there to have access to them throughout the event. Saturday cars can be on the field until 8am, after that it's closed but ample parking is available nearby. saturday evening cars can again get on the field if needed. Sunday is the same, field closed to cars at 8am until after the full scale airshow ends at 4PM, then the field is opened for car traffic and tear down. For more information see: javascript:mox(); http://www.mhrcs.com/pages/Jamboree.htm Online registration is available at the above link as well. RE: Morepower adjustable 3blade scale props
I will be curious to see how your painting goes. I balanced mine by painting the back with clear Stits paint. I roughed them up with sandpaper and so far one blade is fine but the other delaminated slightly (the added paint only) right at the tip. A bit of thin CA cured the problem but I have been told that painting CF props is a hit or miss affair. Whit
