MonoKote-- LusterKote color match
I tried a can of LusterKote Missile Red this weekend. Bought from LHS for $8.95. The intended use was to paint the cowl of a CAP 232 to match the Missile Red Monokote on the plane. Followed the directions exactly. since I normally paint with Automotive finishes and a spray gun. The results were not what I had hoped for. First, the color of the paint isn't even close to the color of the MonoKote. Second, this is supposed to be a gloss finish, but it turned out somewhere between semi-gloss and flat. I would have been better off buying a quart of custom mixed Automotive, even at three times the cost than trying the spray can LusterKote. It just isn't a quality product. W. W. Varnado

RE: Flyin King Takeoffs
Try modifying the main gear to give about 2 to 3 deg of toe in. This usually helps keep a straight take off run.

RE: gas fuel with glo plug no ignition
When I first converted a ST 3000 to gas, I was running the 1/4 X 28 spark plug. It really gave a lot of problems running the engine inverted because the plug fouled so easily. I tapped the head for a 10mm plug. It turns out that the head was too thin and soft and the 10mm plug blew out the first time I ran it. I made an adapter out of brass much like the one that is being described. There was a flange inside the combustion chamber, I turned out the head so the flange would fit. The adapter was made to accept a 10mm plug. However I bored the head out so I could use a 5/8" left hand tap. The threads on the outside of the adapter were cut left handed, but the inside for the 10mm plug were standard right hand. I didn't use anything to seal or lock the threads. Installing the plug lockes the adapter into the head.

RE: Supertiger 3000
First conversion was to EI. Got a syncrospark and walboro carb adaptor from CH. Didn't like the 1/4" Plug so I tapped the head for 10mm. After a few flights the plug blew out of the head and had to make a brass insert in the head for the plug. Later tapped out the insert to 14mm and tried it on gas/glow. Performance was about the same as on gas. Fuel mix was 10% klotz technoplate and rest 87 oct gasoline.

RE: BTE DELTA VORTEX CG QUESTION???????
I have the BTE Delta Vortex with retracts, powered with a YS 61R. The tank is on the CG to allow for installation of the nose wheel retract. Balance it as called for on the plans(21" to 22" from the trailing edge) without fuel and the retracts up. Mine is balanced at the more reaward limit because when the nose gear is down it shifts the balance point foward. How much it shifts is dependent on the size and weight of the nose wheel.

RE: YS 61R-- adjusting the carb
I got some help from a former club member who is familiar with the 61 R. The 61 R definitelywon't run very rich at anything above 1/2 throttle. I made several runs and think I have a feel for the regulator/needle relationship. Got some good sustained runs. Using an APC 12 X 10 pattern prop and just the header ( no pipe ) it will turn a consistent 11,400 rpm. The needle valve ended up exactly 1 turn open. I ordered a MACS pipe for 10cc last night so I will know for sure that I have the right size before I go any further. Thanks for the help,

RE: gas fuel with glo plug no ignition
AV gas has a fair amount of tetra ethyl lead in it. Enough that your glow plugs won't last very long. The TEL will poison the platinum and kill the catalytic capability.

RE: YS 61R-- adjusting the carb
I believe you are correct on the pipe size. After a little more research it fits the dimensions of a 40 size. One of Club members who gave it to me said it was for a 60, but I wasn't knowledgable enough to tell the difference. Back to the drawing board. I don't know about the fuel nitro % issue, but the oil which I am using is mostly synthetic with about 2% castor kart oil.

RE: YS 61R-- adjusting the carb
At 2 1/4 turns open it won't go much above an idle before shutting down. I guess some regulator adjustment is in order. After reading the article which Dar referenced, I decided to go back and check the exhaust timeing on the engine and look closer at the pipe. The exhause duration is 152 deg. When I looked more closely at the pipe I found that it was a twin cone pipe. Where I thought I had 21" from the face of the piston to the beginning of the stinger was in actually only 17.75" to the interior cone termination. Using the correct pipe dimensions and the measured exhaust duration, I calculated that the length should be 25" for 10,000 rpm and 21' for 12,000 rpm. I guess that I'll shoot for the mid point of 11,000 @ 22.8" and adjust the prop loading for that and see what happens. I'll have to make an extension before I can try. I have a 12 X10 APC that I'll try first. Any other sizes will need a trip to the hobby shop. Thanks for your help, but depending on what happens I probably will have more questions.

YS 61R-- adjusting the carb
I have no experience with this engine or a pipe setup and am having some difficulty getting a sustained run. The idle and transition seem to be fine, but as I increase the throttle and the rpms come up it reaches a point where blue smoke really pours out the exaust and the engine shuts down. I would assume as it starts to " come on the pipe" it is going very rich. The high speed needle is down to about 1 1/4 turns open and I am reluctant to close it further. Prior to the smoke starting there is little evidence of excess fuel/oil in the exhaust. I opened the regulator and checked the diaphragm and it is clear and flexible with no holes. The regulator screw is set even with the body casting. The fuel system is tight with no leaks and pressures up OK. I am running a long pipe with a 11 X 9 prop. Fuel is 10.5% Nitro and 18% oil (Cool Power medium Viscosity syn/castor). I am not sure what to do next, so I would greatly appreciate any comments or suggestions.

RE: gas fuel with glo plug no ignition
Aero Nut, The testing was on glow plug. I had intended to use one of these engines on a plane which would have a lot of electronics and I didn't want any potential interference from an ignition. Both the Shindawa and the Stihl produced great power on the gas/glow, but had extremely bad vibration in the 4000 to 5000 range. After a lot of reasearch and comments from others that have been posting on this thread, I came to the conclusion that the problem was ignition timing due to very high compression ratio. The mixes I used were intended to increase the octane rating of the fuel to offset the ignition problem. I finally setteled on a Homie 25cc on gas/glow and it works great.. The other engines did not have the mid range vibration when run on EI with syncrospark. I am using the Stihl on a H9 Ultra Stick and the performance is great on EI.

YS 61R
I just acquired a YS 61R that has never been run. No papers or instructions, but the only thing I lack at this point is the glow plug type and heat range. I'll probably run a 12 X 12 or 12 X 10 pattern prop on it using 20/20 fuel. Any plug recommendations would be appreciated.

RE: gas fuel with glo plug no ignition
AV8TOR, One of the runs was on stright methanol 2% oil and no nitro. Another run was 50/50 methanol/gasoline 2% oil and no nitro. The only mix that came close to being acceptable was 25% methanol, 25% gasoline, 25% ethanol, 23% toluene and 2% oil. If I remember, and calculated correctly, that mix should have had an octane rating of about 118. I could have used this mix, but the cost of the ethanol and toluene made it come out near the cost of glow fuel, so why bother.

RE: gas fuel with glo plug no ignition
I have found only two engines that were not amenaable to operation on glow/gas fuel. Sometime back I discussed the problems I was having with a Stihl 35 cc and a Shindawa 23 cc. Both of these engines had an "effective compression ratio of better than 13/1. I tried several fuel mixes to get the highest octane possible that would still run without constant battery power on the glow plug and in addition several different glow plugs with heat ranges from cold to hot. I was never able to get either of these engines to run without significant vibration in the 4000-5500 rpm range. These problems all pointed to signification ignition advance in this rpm range. I am flying both engines currently, but am operating them on EI syncrospark. Operating in this manner both engines are well behaved and mid-range vibration is minimal. The reason I mention these two engines is that they both have significantly higher "effective compression ratio" than other engines that I have operating of glow/gas. The engines that I have operating on glow/gas are: Homelite 25cc, Mac 28cc, Mac32 cc, Echo 38cc and a Zenoah 40cc. All are well behaved and quite powerful, but all have an effective compression ratio of less than 10/1.

RE: can I add nitromethane to gas directly?
You can mix nitromethane with gasoline, but there are some precautions that need to be observed since some very unstable compounds can form with nitromethane/gasoline mixes. The drag racing community has used these mixes in the past, but there have been some accidents with high (30%+ nitromethane in gasoline) concentrations. First, always pour the nitromethane into gasoline that is constantly agitated. If you pour gasoline into nitromethane, the interface contrentation is high enough to form the unstable compounds even though the final mixture is intended to be less than 30%. Nitro can be safely mixed with methanol at any ratio, but with hydrocarbons, the potential for formation of unstable organo-nitro compounds is always a concern. These compounds are unstable and can decompose explosively with very little energy input.

RE: Substitute for Ether
Greg, Several years ago I was playing aroung with running a Magnum 80FS on gasoline and spark ignition. I was not mixing the gas with oil, but injecting oil into the valve cover. The oil was thinned with mineral spirits until a perry ossilating pump could pump it through a needle valve to regulate the amount of oil that was injected. The Mag 80 has the oil vent under the cam area so I plugged that and tapped the crank case cover for the vent. This seemed to provide adequate lubrication. The Mag 80 is still in service on glow after playing with the gas for a couple of years. Just an idea that might help run fuel to the combustion chamber without oil mixed with it. Will
