RE: Correct Control Line for 1/2A ??
For years I used stainless .012 cable, recently I have switched to the "Spectra" braided fishing line. It comes in a variety of colors, I use yellow, It is available from numerous mail order houses if you can't find it in a local store. Last time I bought it I got it from Bass Pro Shops. http://www.cabelas.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=739094&destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fproduct.jsp%3FproductId%3D738579%26WT.tsrc%3DCSE%26WT.mc_id%3Dpricegrabber%26WT.z_mc_id1%3D738579%26rid%3D40%26mr%3AreferralID%3D8cff6aa3-eb05-11e0-9e9c-001b2166c62d&WTz_l=YMAL%3BIK-115246 By the way the Sullivan Tuffstand is way too heavy for 1/2A

RE: Help with Sig 1/2A Skyray
Jim is 1000% correct. I have a Skyray that I fly all the time. I balance it 3/4 inch from the leading edge, but I am an experienced combat and stunt flyer. A little nose heavy won't hurt for your first flights, you can always take some weight off, but a tail heavy plane is a handful. And don't forget tip weight. I use just a nickle, but a little more won't hurt if you are inexperienced.

RE: 4s pak 1 dead cell?
Sometimes funny things happen with these lipos. I've had two packs that while at the field acted like one cell was bad. Both were 3s, one cheap (Hobbypartz) the other expensive (Flight Power). After I got home and they had sat for a while I was able to charge and balance them. Unless something is loose and intermittent inside I am mystified. Both of my chrgers are balance type.

RE: Ducted Fan Jet CL?
I have seen a couple that were glow powered. One was at the NATS, Model was a U-2. I think some of the new ARF Fans would be neat to convert to CL.

RE: Static vs Flight Current Draw
Thanks for the advice guys, I was trying to make things to close to the max values. Tim's comment made me realize that I have always set my glow engines on he rich side and this can apply to electrics also. And Walt was right on pointing that the differences are small. I really like the electrics. I have done 4 planes so far, all converted from glow, and I probalbly will go all electric in the future

RE: Static vs Flight Current Draw
Ok, here is some data. My measured numbers are lower, comparing static to static, and of course I can’t really compare in-flight since I don’t have an onboard data logger. I’ve done some other motors and the results are typical. I am no so concerned with the absolute difference; they aren’t actually that large, at least for the static case. But if you look at what happens as the airspeed goes up there is a big difference in current draw according to MotoCalc. If there is a significant current drop in the air I could prop up to increase performance. I would expect a RPM increase as the motor unloads as glow engines do. Or maybe a couple of amps is not significant, Like I said I am new to electrics

Static vs Flight Current Draw
I am new to electrics. I bought MotoClac to help me figure out what motor battery esc combo to use and it is helpful, but.. When I measure current draw and rpm on the ground the numbers are always lower than those MotoCalc predicted . I am not sure how far beyond these I can push the motor. I was hoping somebody can help me take the ground numbers and understand what i might expect in the air.

RE: E-power swap out for OS 15
addendum to my last post Obviously I measure the current the motor is drawing on the ground . Does the motor unload enough in the air to make a significant difference of current draw ? Thanks John

RE: E-power swap out for OS 15
I understand what you are saying, My motor is a 1020KV on a 3s battery, If I went to a 4s it would boost the power, or I could go to a larger prop. The problem is it flies OK now so I am satisfied. One thing I am not sure of is how high you can go on the voltage without burning the motor. The motor I am using does not have a max voltage spec and some manufacturers seem to list one and others don't. I know I can't go beyond the max current for long without burning up a motor, been down that road already.

RE: E-power swap out for OS 15
The motor I am using on the MO-1 is rated at 275w. I am using a 9X7 which is not enough prop to get to that power setting. That seems to be the big difference in electrics from glow power, the props need to be be much larger for the same equivalent displacement size. I probably could use a 10 inch prop, but the planes gear is to short since it was originally a glow powered model.

RE: Electric beginner CL planes
Here is the link for the eflite (horizon hobby part) http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=EFLA172 Will Hubin's unit is probably better, he says it is, but the eflite one does work. I plan to see who is using what at Brodak's flyin in june. However I am mostly interested in planes where I can control the throttle, so most of my planes will use the Clancy Arnold U-tronics system You can find his info at http://stunthanger.com/smf/index.php?PHPSESSID=f6c7f60ea1838515d16e09c1e0355b91&board=39.0 I'll try to upload some pictures but right now the forum says they are to large. I also have two 15 size models I have converted to electric, and generally plan to eventually go all electric.

RE: Electric beginner CL planes
I converted a Sterling Fokker D-VII from glow to electric. This is one of the old sheet balsa 1/2A kits. The motor was a Turnigy 2211-2300 http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_index.asp , 10 amp esc, either a 2 or 3 cell 350 mah 25c battery and a timer from http://www.horizonhobby.com/ (the same one they sell for thier electric CL PT-19.) The motor pulls 7+ amps. I use a GWS 6x5 on the 2s, and a GWS 5x4.3 on the 3s battery. It flies slightly bettter with the 6x5 prop.

RE: E-power swap out for OS 15
Take a look at the Alpha 480 series at www.hobbypartz.com I put this motor on a profile MO-1 and it flys as good if not better than with a fox 15. one Problem with electrics is that the tend to like larger props. I am using a master airscrew 9x7 which is a bit larger than normal for a 15. The motor pulls about 17 amps on a 3 cell (11.1v) battery
