RE: Balsa USA 1/4 Scale Nieuport 28 Build
Thought you might be interested. In my snooping around the internet I found a great build thread on RCscalebuilder.com for the Nieuport 28 (1/3 and/1/4 scale). Its unbelievable how detailed they are, works of art! Now I'm looking at mine, looking at theirs, looking at mine. Doh! There are some good tips on there though. One thing that drives me nuts about mine is the elevator. It flexes horribly, it will sustain flight but is weak compared to the beefy wings and fuselage. If i would do one thing it would sheet both surfaces. According to them (builders on RCSB) the original was sheeted also, at a 45 I think. There was no mention however of the incidence in the tail that I spoke of but I'm positive it works for my plane, just a few clicks up and all speeds are equal lift. Possibly it needs one positive degree in the wing incidence.

RE: HELP PLEASE! Suggestions on hand-starting petrol engines
I have a DLE with electronic ignition. Its easy. Just turn on the ignition, choke, flip till it it pops, turn off the choke, flip till it turns over which is just about two flips. If you have a magneto you will need a starter, more reason to get rid of the plastic spinner.

RE: Balsa USA 1/4 Scale Nieuport 28 Build
I know your not at this point of your build but putting incidence in the tail really helps. I bought my Nieuport used. I knew very little about it. When I went throught it I noticed the tail plane had positive incedence, I thought it was a mistake but searching forums I found it necessary in keeping it from lifting at higher throttle. Also the wing differential that is suggested is perfect, needs very little rudder for smooth turns. I might put a little more on the up to give a little better roll rate. Love how this thing flies, like a trainer. Here it is in action- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNcRwWRUV_A&feature=youtube_gdata_player

RE: Balsa USA 1/4 Scale Nieuport 28 Build
Here is a good link to pilot painting. http://www.klasskote.co.uk/pdfs/MAN%20pilot%20painting%20.pdf Use pastel artist chalks. It's more realistic and if you mess up you can wipe it off. I did mine this way and it looks real. I'm not good at that kind of thing but pastels made it easy.

RE: Can you easily paint a prop?
I paint all my props. I work for a prop shop. Rust oleum is the best, durable and fuel proof. Just let it dry 2hours+ between balance coats to let the solvents evaporate. Don't spray it too thick it will chip and crack eventually. Try different tip configurations and colors. Look on line at different ones on the aerobatic planes. White whith red angled tips looks cool. If you have a three blader do one, two, then three stripes. Enjoy!

Enlarging plans
I know it's been asked before but the answers have not been clear. Can you enlarge plans and have it fly properly and structurally will it be sound? I have back ground on building but not from scratch. I already have a set of plans for a 31" WS control line plane. It is very simple to build that's why I like these plans. It's a Mr Mulligan, like a J-3 cub most of it is square sticks except for the round bottom on this.. I am going to enlarge it 2.5 times and make it 77.5" WS and use a DLE30. I have CG calculatoins and will reinforce the firewall and wing center, etc. the real question is should I keep the wood thicknesses enlarged? The new stringers for example will be 1/4" as well as the bulkheads. Should I go smaller stringers and double them( same difference I think)? The firewall will be at 1/2". Keep in mind most of it is sheeted. I am going to use thinner sheetng, 1/4" would be to heavy and harder to use. I am going to split the wing and use a wing tube for easy transport, using plywood at the root and on each rib carrying the tube. Do I need to add more ribs/bulkheads since the spacing is further apart? Other than the small details any suggestions or things to consider?

RE: Enlarging plans
In simple terms why go with the square root? To keep the proportion but smaller to save weight?

Finaly got around to taking pictures. Shes 29" long, BTW. The hardware feels heavy, like lead. I really dont want this project but if it will bring some cash I dont mind.

Is this boat worth fixing up?
I will post pictures later but post a question now. I love old ChrisCrafts but im into RC Aircraft so I would sell to fund that. I was given a boat from a guy at work. I did some looking and its a 1950's ChrisCraft Sedan. It looked in rough shape till I cleaned it off. It is what i would call Garafge Sale condition. It looks solid but was built by someone without an eye for detail. It was not sanded before stain and varnish. It's wood is not warped that I can tell. The hardware appears to be all there but it is un plated or painted. So it will need to be stripped down and re stained and painted. It's going to be a task. I think it maybe Dumas. It will never be cherry since its assembled. Could I get a couple hundred for it with a half decent paint/varnish job?

RE: HobbyKing - Good or Bad
Like many US companies they priced themselves out of business. I'm not for or against HK but if I can get 20 servo extentoins for $5 which are the same exact thing as I buy I my LHS for one, then yes I'm getting it at HK. Would I trust a reciver? I don't have enough experience to say either way. If i had a $10k jet i would not worry about getting an $8 reciever. If I had a $40 foamy jet I don't need a $200 reciver. There are alot of things I would get like an ARF or small parts even props (which have worked equal as APC or MA) that cost way to much at Horizon or the LHS. I'm not going to buy American just to to buy American. If I need a product, it's good and affordable and hapens to be American then I will buy American. Having said that you need to be smart in buying from these wholesalers. If you pay a really low price for something and it fails or needs tweaking to make it work don't whine about it. Fix it, reinforce it or replace the electronics, it still might be cheaper than you would have paid from one of the big name suppliers.

RE: Suggest non 3D rates Sbach 30cc?
Thanks guys! I going with 10 elevator, 15 aileron, 10 expo for low. 15e, 20a, 25expo for mid and 20e, 30a, 30expo for high for starters. Rudder I'm keeping 45 for high and 50% expo down to 25 for low. That should give me plenty of wiggle room to play with.

Suggest non 3D rates Sbach 30cc?
I have a Redwing Sbach 30cc. I don't fly 3D. The most I do is a lomcevac and tumbles. The rest is IMAC type aerobatics. The high rates are too high for my style of flying. The low rates are 15 deg elev & ailerons. Any suggestions?

RE: rate/linkage geometry
I just had an Aha moment. I really dont do 3-D. The instructions have highs for 3-D rates. I think I will put my highs at half that. I will get smaller servo arms and adjust from there. I really would like to have more resolution than a need for 45 deg. elevator. The most I ever do is lomcavacs and tumbles, the rest is IMAC style (not that I'm that good). So thanks guys. but here is what I have it set up as anyway

rate/linkage geometry
I have an Sbach that has rates that go from 45deg. On high rates to 20 deg. for low rates. I started with 140% for he high on the radio but I hav to go down to 30% to get the 20 deg. The servo arm and the horn are the same distance from center (hing or servo spline) to connection point, approx. 1.5". The arms are 90deg to the pushrods, not necessarily to the servo body. Conection on horn is in line with the hinge pivot. Is this correct to have such a low number not close to 100%? Had to start at 140% or it would be almost 0% for low rate. I have not had a plane with 3D rates before. Can take some pics if that would help.

D/R question. 140% to 30% can this be correct?
I have an Sbach that has rates that go from 45deg. on high rates to 20 deg. for low rates. I started with 140% for the high (end rate at 45 deg.) on the radio but I have to go down to 30% to get the 20 deg. RE: Reaming a Prop
If its a very slight wiggle I woulnt worry about it. Balance it till it stays in any position. When you tighten up the prop nut try to hold it centered, basically not let the sides touch the shaft. If you have a significant wiggle these are your options; 1. The easiest is to dry your tears and buy a new one, lesson learned. 2. Try what has been suggested above. Definately use a reamer by hand from the back! 3. This is hard and a last resort. And if your super cheap and can't admit defeat like me! I've filled in the hole with epoxy such as five minute. Find the center ( measure the hub an x, and from tip to tip. if it's it's not wood you can use the rings on the back an measure the center) and start with a small drill bit till I get the reamer started. If its off a fraction it's ok because you more concerned with the balance point shifting when you mount it. Blade track of a 16th or two will matter little on an R/C. 4. Paint it up all shiny with an old spinner painted ip all shiny mount it to a piece of finished wood and you have a nice static display! I have a room full of them, like a big game trophy room! [:D]

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
Does anyone have the plans to build a wing set for the Topflight Staggerwing? I know they are discontinued but you can still get all the other pieces from Tower. This is my dream plane and it's the perfect size I was looking for! I have seen them come up for sale but they are asking out of my budget for them. Besides if you do bust up the wings what then?

RE: Fuel Lines Tubing
(Insert hobby shop name closest to us) hardly ever has anything in stock. To be fair the economy has made it so. Never the less they really push electric and don't have good customer service. Seems like your interupting their barbershop talk. One person in particular in "airplanes" knows nothing about nitro, or seems to careless. Go to the car section and they have nitro fuel line by the foot. Amazingly I found that on my own after the "airplane" guy told me what ever is on the rack. The 3ft overpriced dubro packs. Even then they will only have one pack. If your in a pinch go to Elmhust to Al's Hobby in downtown. Especially if you need a prop, they have a whole wall of all sizes. It's a 30 minute drive but they have everything and more. And they know what the sell or find someone who does. Not promoting but them but I will drive out of my way for good customer service and good advice.
