RE: Radio 3rd channel question
ORIGINAL: mfr02 Plug a servo in. Work whatever the TX has to operate the channel. Observe the servo. Does it just have 2 positions or can it be stopped in any position? An ESC will follow the same behaviour. If proportional. the ESC will work as required. If just 2 positions, you get 2 speeds, one might be stopped, it might be anything else.
I was thinking the 3rd or more channels were just an on/off switch that could also use a servo. I would like to plug in a small esc into the 3rd channel. It would be nice to have a 3rd channel proportional knob to adjust speed on an esc.

Radio 3rd channel question
On a 3 channel pistol grip radio. Can a speed controller be plugged into the 3rd channel to run and adjust the speed of another much smaller motor, not to propell the boat, but to run a small accessory. Thanks, Phil

Johnson 970 Motors
Anyone have any info. on these motors. I head they are good motors with lots of torque. Is it true they make 2 types of this motor, a low RPM version, and a high RPM version?

RE: Fine Design charged my credit card $865.00 without my authorization on 10/13/11 True Story
I use to buy a lot of parts from Chris up to about 7 or 8 years ago. Even then you had to keep after him. He would tell you he had something in stock to get your order, when he had to order it, get it in and then send the order to you. Or a few times just forgot about my order, after I would call weeks later to check on my order. I stopped doing business with him years ago. As stated there are several other reliable companies to do business with.

RE: Dumas 36
Here's something you might run into as you run your boat. I had this problem, well not actually a problem. As you are in a turn, the way the water will come off the front quarter of the boat, it tends to get a lot of water coming into the cockpit area. I saw on a site years ago a guy had this problem as I had. On the pic, between the marks, you can see I added a little piece along the chine line. A 1/4" triangle spruce piece I bevelled each end, and shaped a little to fit smoothly, and painted. If you look closely down the chine line you can see how it is not a straight as before, you can see it buldge down a little there. The water comes off nice as it was built, but can work its way up into the boat. With this little mod, the water peels off and curls back into the water.Just something to think about. I also tend to go a little faster that scale speed sometimes, so depending your set up, you might not have this problem. This boat does look good going through the water.I've had lots of comments over the years.

RE: Gyro front or rear??
I just read a few posts about this subject. The best advice I saw was to learn how to drive better with more experience. You can us a gyro, and can tune it down as you go untill you dont need it anymore. Isnt that like getting more experience behind the wheel. Weening yourself off.

RE: Carbon fiber sheets???
The reason its so thick is. I had two blocks, One 1/2'' thick and One 3/8" thick. I had to drill two screws into each side to mount it to the chassis. Along with drilling the hole for mounting the shock. Thicker just seemed to be a better choice. The stock plastic front shocktower didnt work too well when I used it with the orginal chassis and stretched the wb ( spacers to shock, too much flex ). So I fabed a new one. When I made another chassis ( longer ) I could mount the tower where I wanted it, without going too far foreward. The rear I used 1/2" plastic because I did something a litttle different than stock configuration. Sorry if I posted in the on-road section. I just saw something on carbon fiber and decided to post.

RE: Carbon fiber sheets???
I have a HPI Wheely King I made a project out of. Fabed a longer chassis out of 3/16" Kydex plastic, adding 6" to the wb. For shock towers, on the front I cut one out of a 1/2" block of carbon fiber. I used a 4" cutting disk to shape, and then a Dremel to finish shaping. The rear Shock tower I used 1/2" plastic. Moved the steering servo to the front axle, along with lots of other mods. Not sure you can still call this a WK now. Your right about being careful cutting and grinding CF. I use to work with it alot. Had to where a respirator, glasses and long sleeves. It will even shoot out sparks as you grind on it.

RE: Astro Flight Marine Motor 25 Replacement
Back in the late 90's I used this a few times until I went to a brushless motor. But in its day, this was one of THE motors to have. I still have the orginal box I keep it in. Only used it a few time, along with this esc.

RE: Dumas 36
Nice progress there Check6. After glassing mine and sanding, and another coat or 2 to fill holes and smooth things out. I finished mine off with a clear coat of high gloss polyurethane. Some may not do this, but some of the pics I posted were taken a few weeks ago. It has held up pretty well since '95 when I built it.

RE: Dumas 36
This was my first boat build back in '95. It will take you a while to get where you are satisfied, even then, its a never ending project. Over several years I went through several motor choices, along with trying different gearing, props and cells count, and others accessories. I have built many others and have sold them all but this one, which I enjoy running the most.

RE: Dumas 36
I built This Dumas Runabout about 15 years ago, I went through sever motor setups util I got the one I like. I added a 6 volt water pump under the front floor that cools the motor and exits out the two transom exhaust outlets. It looks cool even sitting still and water is pumping out the exhausts. I also added two 3 volt lights mounted on side of the windshield. I have had a lot of boats, but this is still my favorite boat to run.

RE: My Dumas 36
I built one of these Dumas runabouts 15 years ago and it is still my favorite boat. I have several boats and I would part with all of them but this one. They run great and look good on the water underway. There's no end to the accessories and mods you can add to this boat thats not in the plans. My favorite, the 2 transom exhaust fittings. I drilled them out, I have a 4 volt water pump that cools my motor and exits through these transom fittings. Even sitting still it has water exiting these, it looks like a real boat. No matter where you run it, people will comment on it. Its a good build to do. Thomas

RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
Rich, My father was on the USS Dauntless PG-61. It was a gunboat ''PG'' converted for other uses. When in Italy I found out most of the pictures he took was of top secret documents he mad into a booklet for the pres. on the progress of the war. No copy machines back then to just make a copy so they took pics of documents. The Dauntless he was asigned to was in DC most of the time. He was the ships photographer, as thats what his rank says. There is a history behind this boat. A few name changes, a fire, it ran aground one time before the war.

RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
Rich, My sister did get a little information from my dad as to what he did during the war. But you know it can be like tough sometimes. Most just lived it and put it behind them. My dad was interested in photography all his life. From what my sister found out. The pics my dad had taken and made into a booklet for the president were taken in Italy, when he was there, not sure how many times he was there. I guess he was taking a photo report of the war to show the pres. how things were going. He did say he would develope them while an armed guard stands by. As I mentioned before we do have a pic of him doing that. Im not sure if he took any pics of the Dauntless. I would guess he did. I would love to see a pic that he himself took. From what I understand he was the photographer on the boat for Admiral King and whoever they had there at the time meeting. I would think some of those pics can be seen now after all these years. Just trying to find the right source to look. Phil

RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
Rich, No pics at the moment. Me and my family are researching to find out through his war records to get photos if possible. My father passed 10 years ago and its sad things you find out and would like to ask. We found out he was in Italy taking phots also, and while stationed in DC took a lot while on the Dauntless. The pics he took he made into a booklet for the president to see. We have one photo of him sitting in the photo lab working with and armed guard standing beside him. So I would guess most pics we wont be able to see. Phil

Dumas 36'' SK Daddle
Remember these boats. Its a nitro kit that has been around a long time. I decided to build one and convert it to electric. I have had the kit for a while, I just needed a new project to do. I made 2 water hatches to seal the electrics. The motor hatch I glassed in a fiberglass dome to clear the gear drive I made for the Graumper 700 motor on 12 cells I wanted to use. The hardware kit had a solid shaft but I installed a flex cable and stuffing tube for more adjustability. The rudder was under the boat, I moved it to the transon, it just looks better, and added trim tabs. As you would guess being a flat bottom, it rides like a crackerbox. With a little adjusting, you can change how it rides, or how it hops. I have only run it a few times, mostly as a retrieval boat. I have built mono`s, hydro`s and several other Dumas kits. I Just wanted to build something a little different this time.

RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
I have considered building the Dauntless. I have built several Dumas boats. My favorite I built about 15 years ago is the 36'' runabout. I have several boats and I would part with all of them but the runabout. My dad was in the Navy during WWII and was a photographer and stationed in DC, and I just found out he was on the Dauntless working as a photographer during the end of the war. He also went to Italy as a photographer. These are things we never knew till lately, my dad never talked about it. We only knew that he was a photographer. We have boxes of photos that he took then. My older sister has taken some to get them scanned to disc, and she has said several times at the photo place, they ask where did she get all the strange size photos. My dad also worked the photo lab and could develope in any size he wanted. Thats why we have all kinds of photos in strange sizes, not just your standard sizes. Thomas

Strontium 150 electric motor
I have this electric motor I bought about 10 or 12 years ago to use in a small boat. Its a Strontium 150 I bought from Hobby-Lobby. I think its a 6 or 7 cell motor I cant remember. I wound up not using it. Hobby-Lobby no longer sell them, which might answer my question. Anybody have any info on this motor? Is it any good? Has a 5mm shaft, It looks like its a well made motor. Thanks, Phil
