RE: need a motor recommendation for a redcat caldera with 120a esc
ORIGINAL: nitrosportsandrunner well, i have run a traxxas vxl system in a volcano epx pro on 3s lipo...with no punch control settings and I didnt have spur gear/diff issues. whether or not you have diff/spur gear issues will depend how you drive it. putting the punch control down (also the braking force) will indeed help. bud if you land with the throttle on with that kinda power youll strip the spur. you can put the most insane system in the truck and if you have a good trigger finger it will last a long time. or you can run the stock system with a harsh trigger finger and break parts all the time.
How was it compared to stock..power wise?

RE: need a motor recommendation for a redcat caldera with 120a esc
I think I decided to get a tacon 540l 4000kv motor with a 15t pinion and set the punch on my esc to the min setting because this setup is going to have a lot more power (site says 1200 watts) I have a let's see attitude about it and if I start stripping spurs and diffs I will go with something slower. The question I have is the tacon has a 5mm shaft so I have to use a mod 8 inion which is a little bit bigger in diameter than a 3mm 32p.. I just don't know how much so I ordered 1 tooth down(15t) thinking it should fit and went with a slightly higher kv motor. Do you guys think the 15t will work if a 16t 3mm pinion did? Is this motor too powerful for the Caldera with no center diff? I only chose it because the standard 540 tacon motors are sold out and from what I can tell the 540l is slightly longer and slightly more powerful(not sure how much so)

I am going to install a tacon 4000kv 540L motor with my brushless hobbies 120a. Because I have to use 5mm mod 8 which is slightly bigger in diameter I doubt I'll be able to stick with the 16t pinion. Would I be over geared with a 15t?
ORIGINAL: PetRock The Velineon will fit if you take the black plastic endcap off (it just snaps on and off). Another option would be a <a href=''http://www.hobbypartz.com/96m211-3660-3500kv-7t.html'' target=''_blank''>Tacon 3660 3500kv: it's a bit longer and has a wider rotor than the stock motor... the KV is almost identical so the top speed will be almost the same: but it has a lot more torque: accelleration will be very noticably better. And it's less than $35 new!
Do traxxas 32p pinions fit on the tacon 5mm shaft? If not What 32p pinions fit? Will I lose any room and not be able to run a 16t because of the larger shaft? Is the tacon that much better then the hobby wing ezrun?

need a motor recommendation for a redcat caldera with 120a esc
First off the esc burned out which was totally my fault but either way I replaced it with a brushless hobbies 120a because its a steal over that 80a. Now I need to pair it with a new motor as this one could barely handle a 35a and 3s. I don't want to go faster just run cooler for bashing(why I got the 120a). I don't particularly want more power because then the diffs start failing. Does anyone know the motor that comes with the earthquake 8e since the cars share a drive train something like that should work well? I've heard the velineon motor can be a good match ibut may overpower the diffs.

unmatched esc to motor(overkill esc)
Basically the esc went out on my Caldera 10e. It was only s 35a esc but seemed to always enter thermal shutdown on 3s so while looking for a replacement I just couldn't pass up a brushlesshobbies esc. I wanted the 80 but figured hell for hardly anything I went to the 120a.. the motor in the Caldera is a 3560 size 3700kv motor and I'm not really looking for a faster car just one that works and from my research the esc just supplies the amperage the motor can handle and shouldn't burn it out... right?

RE: i want to build a cheap basher..real cheap
ORIGINAL: nitrosportsandrunner pretty much any of the $99-$140 tamiya kits will handle brushless power. They have plastic geared trannies but the gears are very wide and thus the load is spread. The holiday buggy, plasma edge, lunchbox, midnight pumkin, hornet ect will all work. Or you can find a evader/rustler roller for fairly cheap on ebay. Sometimes you can snag a used VXL motor for as little as $35-40. Its either that or buy another ezrun motor like your caldera comes with. You mentioned that you wanna put a 80 or 120a ESC in the caldera...I hope you are gonna upgrade the motor as well. At least go with a vxl motor...if not a 1/8 scale BL motor. And be prepared to upgrade some other bits. The caldera is pretty tough with the stock system, but put alot more power to it and the weak points will start to show up. Make sure to buy an ESC that is adjustable and turn the punch control way down....otherwise youll strip spur gears and ring gears alot. Remember, the caldera doesnt have a slipper clutch to protect the gears like a slash 4x4 or other high powered 4wd trucks do.
Thanks I don't really have to upgrade the Caldera it was jut an idea because I liked the idea of using the brushless hobbies esc and wanted an excuse to buy one.. I may get it and find another truck to put it n just not sure what I would buy.

Basically I have a brushless redcat 10e with a 35a esc that I would like to replace the a 80 or 120a so I wanted to use the 35a to put into a cheap roller.. I have spare servos and receivers so I just need a brushless motor and a roller. I am pretty open to suggestions for just about anything(given a 35a esc would work) except a road car. I was thinking a cheap 2wd stadium truck but could be anything
ORIGINAL: PetRock Wow! That must have been some crash! Did the truck go spinning away from the tree... or just crumple into it? You must have heard the hit? I almost wish you told me you broke the front bumper too - it seems to be made of such a stiff plastic that I don't think it soaks up any impacts: it just passes them along to the chassis :( It would have been nice to see it take one for the team :)
It was a direct hit at 50mph(top speed run on 3s & 16t pinion) and it recoiled to the side after impact. IMO I doubt any other vehicle would have survived without similar damage. Only other crash I have had that was anywhere near this was a runaway tmaxx that broke in half from impact. It required more parts and much more money to fix.
ORIGINAL: PetRock
ORIGINAL: kashjeff Where do ya get aluminum steering knuckles??? mine have been stripped out and i already bought stock replacements, think i paid 5 bucks for them. Are the aluminum ones expensive?   would love to find every possible aluminum upgrade and  make this thing bulletproof.
The the online and paper manuals list the aluminum upgrade parts: steering knuckles, front/rear hubs, shock towers, pivot braces, hexes, steering bar, shocks etc... but I think they're all way too expensive. Maybe the knuckles are worth it because you can tighten their top+bottom mount screws without binding the steering... and maybe the steering bar as it rides on bearings... but the rest is too rich for my blood. If I break a knuckle a $5 plastic replacement is going in. If I break it a second time, then I'd rethink aluminum. <a href=''http://urchobby.com/proddetail.php?prod=MPO-03 '' target=''_blank''>$37? well i had a bad day today.. bad and good Good in the sense i got to do some crazy high speed runs on 3s Bad in I decided to run into a tree at full speed(~50mph) Broken front chassis, upper brace, front shock, bent screws, and steering block. The good news is thanks to redcat's reasonable prices on replacement parts the damage comes to around $15. basically stick to 2s at night. I live on a golf course and have front and rear lights on it which has been fine until now. RE: *Official* Caldera 10E Video, Picture And Discussion Thread
I put 7k in the front and 30k in the rear and now wish I would have gone higher in the front.. the rear seems perfect for a basher and now will actually climb some rocks. I think perfect would be 15k front 30k rear for anyone else out there(15k would work well all around too if you don't want to buy 2). Keep in mind this is for a basher but I think that's what most people do anyway. The 16t pinion makes a big difference in speed but barely fits without ample room for adjustments. Not sure the ie difference between 15 but it impressed me on 2s where I am used to 3s on other cars. I have been beating the life out of this thing and just keep losing a screw here and there but no broken parts. In the mean time I have broken my mini revo 3 times.

Try to deal with hobbypartz for cheap stuff if possible(like batts). Its no secret customer service is non existent but your experience makes me want to never buy an other thing from them. Try opening like 20 support tickets until they finally help you or just keep sending empty boxes to them(I like that one)

RE: *Official* Caldera 10E Video, Picture And Discussion Thread
not sure on top speed with 2s but 35 seems close. The biggest thing you can do is program the esc punch control from 3 to 7(factory default).. makes it come alive. The diffs ship open/empty which makes handling/crawling painful..I'm going to put 40k in mine and see how that does. I tried 3s for a few min and it books pretty fast but seems quite slower than my mini revo on 3s but it may have been the golf course grass causing a loss of traction. Servo went out Ike I expected but it went out in about 4 min(didn't expect that) after some investigation it turns out some of the CA glue I used as loctite worked into the servo saver..
ORIGINAL: kashjeff Ok Guys I'm back with more questions.....Need more Advice. <font size=''3''>Batteries. I've been looking all over the web and found 2s lipo packs everywhere. Some are outrageously expensive, others, not so bad.  I am quite comfortable dropping 45 to 65 dollars on a 5000 or 5800mah lipo pack. <font size=''3''>Chargers. Whole new ball game. I've surfed for hours on ebay and amazon and every hobby site on google's database and found some CRAZY PRICES.... $65 ~ 100+, $169 just for a charger!!??!!?!? WOW. Still in shock. Why does the charger cost as much or more than the battery? I do not need a charger with all the bells and whistles.  I'm still very new to this. I've found chargers on ebay for less than $50 but none have the stock 4mm banana plug. I want to plug my battery into the charger and then into the car. simple. Website that i purchased the truck from has lipos with the stock plug but no chargers. (jnjhobbies.net) I've found a couple chargers with what looked like alligator clips, is this a good way to charge or a fire waiting to happen? (remember I have a 4 month old baby so fire hazzards are a no no.) <font size=''3''>Questions. Do I have no choice but to change the connections on the car and current batteries to accommodate a lipo/charger? What brand chargers do you guys use, how much did you pay and where did you get it? Does anyone know of a good battery and charger combo? At some point I'd like to go up to 8.4v if possible. Please feel free to list any advice/opinions/knowledge/experience. ezrun 25a Max temp?
Its well known they enter thermal protection after a few min of 3s runs although rated for it so I turned it off(keep in mind its a spare) and tested with a 3s. After some speed runs from a 1600mah batt I got up to 160 degrees with constant runs(cooled to 120 in about 20 secs). I know some speed controls are rated up to 200+ degrees so just curious if this is an acceptable range?

I ended up with 2 2s sky lipo 4400 batteries because I wanted a light kit from hobbypartz and they were only $18 and I have a couple sky lipos that I am very happy with. I've had good luck with soft packs that I run harder than I will in this truck. http://www.hobbypartz.com/77p-sl4400-2s1p-20c-2222.html This one looked good and comes from the us warehouse.. I just can't stand the lack of customer support from hobby king so I avoid them if I can. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/%5F%5F14976%5F%5FTurnigy%5F5000mAh%5F2S1P%5F20C%5Fhardcase%5Fpack%5FUSA%5FWarehouse%5F.html Caldera is in its way from URC with. Few spare parts I plan on recording it on 2s and one of my smaller 3s batts for some speed run videos.. I scoured the internet for a Caldera on 3s and found nothing so maybe I'll help with a batt comparison from nimh to 2s to 3s.
