RE: My first tank, a Tiger I. It's a start.......
Hey guys, I thought I would give you a quick update on my Tiger. I weathered the smoke launchers and blacked the inside surfaces like Pah co chu puk suggested. I painted the inside with flat black, drybrushed the edges with black, then drybrushed with metallic grey, the used black and gray chalk to give them a sooty look. I also looked up a lot of info on Otto's uniform and made the changes that rivetcounter pointed out. I took a picture but noticed the green/gray looks almost black in the picture. Oh well, in person I think I got the color looking pretty darn close.

RE: My first tank, a Tiger I. It's a start.......
I'm really floored by such nice comments. Thanks a lot everyone. I think I've nailed down how I'm going to repaint Otto. I'm going to start with Tamiya's XF-76 Gray-Green and add just a touch of XF-65 Field Grey. I think that'll get me pretty close to where I need to be. yellowshaker I hope to go to a Danville gathering sometime. It's not too far from where I live, the hard part is working into the crazy work schedules that my wife and I have.

RE: My first tank, a Tiger I. It's a start.......
ORIGINAL: danlrc Yama, Really a great job - very subtle and great looking paint work and weathering. Can you post a bit more about how you weathered, etc and post more pics? Thanks, Dan
Hey Dan, Sorry but while I was building, I neglected to take pictures of the various stages of the weathering. Sometimes I would spend the whole week on a specific detail and the change was so subtle, I figured it wouldn't show up in the pictures. I read a lot of painting "how to's" and I determined there really isn't a 100% "must do this" way to get the job done, but I did find techniques that showed up again and again (in other people's builds) so I decided to stick to those. Here's a basic run-down of how I laid down the paint (I'm a beginner, so there was a lot of experimentation). 1 - Tamiya light grey primer 2 - Airbrushed flat black preshadowing 3 - Airbrushed Tamiya Dark Yellow for base coat 4 - Airbrushed Tamiya Red Brown Shadowing over base coat 5 - Airbrushed light coat of Dark Yellow again that let Red Brown show as "shadows" 6 - Tamiya gloss coat 7 - Decals with a little MicroSol (Steps 1-7 are in the slides in the video I posted) 8 - Red Brown Wash diluted with Isopropyl Alcohol 9 - Tamiya gloss coat again 10- Black pin wash to make some smaller details pop 11- Brown (not Red Brown) pin wash 12- Smeared some Rust and Black chalks in verticle motion over hull and turret vertical areas 13- Tamiya Dull Coat 14- Drybrushed Tamiya Black, Red Brown, Metalic Grey over various edges of the tank 15- Painted paint chips on areas of wear with Brown and Black. 16- Used diluted Red Brown and Black (in layers) and painted rust streaks over random vertical surfaces. 17- Randomly repeated steps 8-16. Just layered it over and over until I liked what I saw. 18- Mixed Tamiya Buff, Neutral Grey, and White and sprayed a very light dust coat over the whole tank. Went a little heavier with dust coat on lower hull and roadwheels. That's basically how I did mine. Hope that helps you out Dan. Rivetcounter I think I found the picture you mentioned using Google. Here is something embarrassing to admit. I didn't know they called them "wraps". When I searched for "green grey panzer wrap", I found a ton of good examples to look over. Thanks for the heads up on that one!!!

RE: My first tank, a Tiger I. It's a start.......
Thanks for such nice comments guys!! And thanks for the tips too. I'm definately still doing "updates". Pah co chu puk, haha yeah, I keep meaning to paint those inner surfaces on the smoke launchers and I get distracted by some other detail and forget to go back and do it. I need to get that detail trimmed up. rivetcounter, thanks for the tip on the uniform. I really debated between grey and black. It was really hard to tell in the pictures I have. Sometimes it looked grey, and others looked black. I thought I remembered one point in his book he mentioned wearing black, but then I couldn't find it when I went back and looked again. That is a repaint that will be easy to do.

My first tank, a Tiger I. It's a start.......
I've wanted to build a tank for a long long time. There were so many different ones that I liked I honestly just couldn't decide which to buy. I weighed pros and cons to different options for years, literally. Ultimately I ended up going with a Tamiya Tiger I. I've built plenty of other RC cars and trucks before, but this was my first tank. I found the mechanics of the build to be very easy and straight forward. Where I really hit a harsh learning curve was on painting. I really struggled with the "how much is too much" on weathering, .etc. I am reading Tigers in the Mud, by Otto Carius, so I based the build on his tank #213. I didn't go total hardcore "this is exactly how it looked on this day in 1943....." but I used his book as a general guide. So far the upgrades I've added are: Kenny Kong metal tracks Metal barrel Tapered antenna Photo etched grills over the radiators I'm actually pretty nervous to post pics and a video here because I've seen you guys post some really impressive builds, but I figured "what the hell....." So here's a video I made for some of my friends to see (since they can't come see it in person for now) [link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfNaYwv2z1M]Yama's Tank Build Video[/link] ....and I'm posting a few pics too. Oh and BTW thanks to all of you for posting such good info. I've been avidly reading and taking notes, and it helped me enormously with my build.
ORIGINAL: Jpsonoma Good to see more cup racers out there. Yama86, did you just buy the aluminum shock bodys, or did you buy the whole aluminum shock set? I'm just curious as to what parts get used from the stock shocks if you just buy the aluminum bodys? Does anyone else have problems with your tires rubbing on the inside of the 510 body? I might end up spraying the outside

Thanks for all the nice comments. I took some video of my truck sitting on the workbench testing lights and running a little around the basement chasing dust bunnies. I was playing around with a new camcorder and new editing software. This video won't leave you wondering why I never got into cinema, but it shows some of the features of the truck.
ORIGINAL: Redvanmafia I want one of these new cup racers!, are they any good?...
I can't speak from the point of view of someone who races, I just build and drive for fun. I think it's a great kit. It goes together quickly and easily. The car drives great and is nice and stable, even at top speed. There are a lot adjustments to play around with and the car is just flat out tough (it can handle a roll or two with out breaking to pieces). Lots of HopUp parts on are the way, and many are already available.
ORIGINAL: Lunchboxer How do you control the winch?! I remember you use it w/ a 4EXA, right?! So no extra channel for it? Or? Looking good!! [sm=thumbs_up.gif]
Haha, actually, I didn't bother to hook up the electronics for the winch. I didn't feel like tearing down the cab again. It was a real bear to get all the electronics in there. Every time I open her up, it's like one of those old "snake in the can" gag gifts they used to have. Wires jump out at me and make a huge mess.

Added one of the 3Racing winches to the front brush guard. Strange coincidence, the winch was already painted the same color as my truck. I couldn't have matched it better if I tried. Also finally got around to mounting the snowboards in the bed of the truck.

RE: tundra rtr?
Buy a RTR, build one yourself, or have john01374 build it for you. If you get one you'll love it. All the Tamiya 3speeds are a ton of fun to drive. Personally, I enjoy the build process, but you said you want to drive it asap, so building may not be for you. If, on the offchance, you do decide to try to build one yourself, the instructions that Tamiya provides are very well done.

RE: New M-Chassis from HPI !
I got my parts that I ordered last week. Picked up carbon fiber shock towers (front and rear) and top deck. Also picked up the aluminum threaded shock bodies. I'm real happy with the quality of the parts. Well made, and they should be for what HPI charges for them. Believe me, I'm under no delusions that this is going to make my car any faster. I just like working on my cars and trucks. I don't know why, but I have fun doing it. Lucky for me too, because I'm such a bad driver I'm always crashing into anything that jumps out in front of me.

I was running my Datsun up and down the street this past Sunday and my neighbor came out to see the new car. He has had an LST and HPI Baja 5B in the past. Now he said he is going to start working on getting some of our other neighbors to get Cup Racers as well. The infection is spreading!! :D
ORIGINAL: skottoman Dood! Your mistake was a blessing in disguise! The matte black on the outside looks sooooo amazing! I'm going to have to try that sometime. Did you use lexan paint for the outside? I wonder if it will chip off? Regardless, as of now for the "new build" pix, it looks frikin' awesome!!!!! That is really cool, makes you want to get more of these awesome kits eh?!
The paint I used was a primer used for painting metal and plastic miniature figures. It is made by GamesWorkshop. I've used it on a bunch of different surfaces and it seems to bond to just about anything on the planet :) Thanks for such a nice complement. I was so bummed when the original idea went bad, so it is really cool that I ended up with paint-job better than I expected.

RE: New M-Chassis from HPI !
Well now I'm completely finished. I just put the finishing touches on the body. I decided to leave the mirrors and wipers off for now. I may paint them matte black and put them on later though. I had a learning experience with the body for sure. I use an airbrush to paint, and I have always done a few light coats and hit them with the hairdryer between coats. Then I always back it with silver or white. I just do one coat right after the other and it doesn't take too long to do. I have painted quite a few bodies this way, and never had a problem. This time I decided to back with black to take some of the crazy "pop" out of the red I was using. I did my usual 2-3 coats, dryer, then backed with black. I let it sit for an hour and came back to check on it, and the black had bled through the red on the doors on both sides of the car. I decided to pull off the overspray film and do some painting on the outside of the body to cover my mistake. I masked off the top half of the body and did each lower side in primer black. The results I ended up with are ten times better than the original paint scheme I was going for. I love the way the body turned out. I'm going to let the body sit for a few more days so the paint can fully cure and then go run the snot out of this little rocket.

RE: New M-Chassis from HPI !
Well here is the progress I've made so far. I have the car together and I took it out for some shakeout testing and trued up my steering. It ran really well. I ended up using my DX3R for TX/RX, a Trinity Kimodo 19t, and a Novak GTS esc. It's a fast little car, and fun to zip around with. I really like how well the car went together. I also laid some paint on the body today. I broke the #1 rule of Lexan and painted the black parts of the car on the outside so I could have a matte finish. I am going for the "weekend racer look".
