RE: Warbirds Over Montgomery
Us guys over here in Louisiana would love to come as well, but we too have an event here at home scheduled that weekend. Next year, we'll be planning our first annual Warbird event, probably the second week of October. We need to try to start coordinating our events to where we can all attend. We love to travel.

RE: Quadra 75 in a Top Flite P-47
Theory is, if it will fit, it will work. But, and this is a big but, you don't wan't to have to add any extra weight to the tail to get it to balance. It's always good to add a heavier engine if nose weight is needed to balance, but you don't want to add too heavy of an engine to where tail weight has to be added. Also, and this is just my personal opinion, forget about the speed. I know there a lot of guys out there that like to see just how fast they can get their plane to fly, but in reality, it is so non-scale. It's fun to watch for a flight or two, but after that it sorta gets monotonous. If you want a scale-like bird, try to keep the speed as scale as possible. With that being said, you've got an engine that will turn a nice, scale four-blade prop. Just my two cents.

RE: Help me chose my next war bird.
The Top Flite P40 is another option, that is if you're interested in P40. As someone else mentioned, there is the Skyshark P40, which is no longer in production, but there are still some floating around for sale out there. You could use your exhaust on either one, but you would have to get new retracts.

RE: Warbirds Over Texas 2012 WBOTX
ORIGINAL: rangerman I respectfully disagree with the comment that inferred the event was not ran well. I fell it was professionally conducted. The pilots were instructed on safety several times while I was there. There was ALWAYS a contest coordinator at the flight line. The spectator area was well away from the tent area that that pilots set up. The visitors were told to stay behind the roped off area until the public viewing took place during lunch (I know this because my friend was asked to stay behind the roped off flags). They were futher away than any other field I've seen. I CD events and thought that safety was the highest I've seen. Every pilot had a spotter at all times. I didn't see any hot dogging. The planes were fast and if it scares some people to go fast then don't do it. These pilots were all flying the set pattern as directed. One guy slowed and the other one didn't expect it. I could go on and on but I think everyone gets the point. It was a well presented event and the rules were above and beyond those required on AMA's rules pages for this event type. I actually felt bad for Terry and Ed because they were so dedicated to their responsibilities they didn't get to enjoy what the spectators did. Terry seemed to never leave his post (unless he visited the smelly saunas) but he seemed happy in his labor...thanks Terry! I wouldn't mind helping next year so you can take some more breaks. So before you make a derogatory comment about fellow modeler under the bus, please realize they are fellow modelers and we are all sharing the same passion. I ask that you put yourself in their shoes and think about how you would feel if someone belittled your hard work. As a good friend says, 'thanks for making it to the end'. Tim
I want to thank you for your comments. As I was reading through everyone's posts, a couple of them began to make my blood boil. When that happens, the moderators have a hayday with me. So, I want to back every word you wrote, as I couldn't agree with you more. And for those of you who think that the event was ran in an unsafe manner, those of you who think that it wasn't ran by AMA's standards, those of you who say nothing about the positive things, always bringing out the negative, stay your asses at home next year! I, for one, don't want you there, and I travel with a crew that definately won't mind your absence. If you do show, I'll make it a point to have Terry Farmer point you out to me when I get there. You and I will have a chance to get to know each other. You will have the chance to give me a personal tour of everything you find wrong with the event. By doing this, you will have all the time in the world to vent there on the spot, relieving your urges to go jump behind your keyboard at home. People who come on here don't come here to hear the negative, they want to hear how great it was. They want to hear the great things they missed, not to hear what "YOU" found wrong with the event. As an event organizer myself, I know how hard it is to try to please everyone, I know how hard it is to "try" to keep things safe, while trying to keep things fun. Terry and his crew are some of the best I've ever seen at doing this. They put on a superb event. It pisses me off to the utmost extent to hear/see people tearing down what those guys have built. Go put on your own event! I'll make it a point to not be there! Oh yeah, my name is John Kennedy from West Monroe, La. and I'll be there again next year.

RE: Park Zone's Icon A5
I got a chance to fly my flying buddy's Icon. I was impressed. Sure, it does wag (dutch roll) a bit, but it doesn't affect the handling at all. In fact, many "scale" r/c Corsairs, and even the full scale Corsair, had the same "wagging" characteristic. Enough about the unimportant wag. The plane flies great. Plenty of power, takes off nicely even when the water is a bit choppy. The 3-blade prop does howl a bit, though it's no big deal. I was impressed enough with the plane that I bought the PNP version. Still waiting on it to arrive. I'd like to thank TimBle for the head's up on the inner seam. This is electricity we're dealing with, and the last time I checked water and electricity doesn't go well together. Overall, I think the plane is well worth the money.

RE: Sky Shark P-40
I've got a Quadra 52 on mine and the engine is not broken in yet. I'm turning a Master Airscrew 20X10 and only getting around 4800 RPM on the ground, but the engine is unloading in the air. On yours, I would think that an 18X10, or even a 20X10 would work. Props are a lot like women, have to try different ones until you find one you like. Good luck.

RE: Question as a new potential member
Joe, get involved in a club. If you stick with this hobby long enough, you'll find that flying alone gets old. This hobby is just as much about fellowship as it is flying. Clubs will have members to help you with any issues, or questions, that you may have. With that being said, most clubs will require you to be an AMA member. It's all about liability issues, which I can fully understand. Just bite the bullet and do it. It boggles my mind why some people here on RCU make such a huge issue out of being an AMA member. It is what it is, what it is!

RE: Why Doesn't The AMA and the Hobby as a whole market to minorities?
Blacks/Browns/Yellows couldn't give two hoots less about model aviation. If they did, the author of this thread wouldn't be asking such a stupid question. Why don't we see any minorities in our hobby magazines? There aren't any interested enough in the hobby. They know it's there, they simply choose not to participate. On the other hand, there are many monorities in the R/C car hobby.

RE: Why the AMA is not growing...........
You've got a very valid point, yet there are a lot of people who would join a club and fly if their money was green enough. I don't know of too many people who fly by themselves. Flying is a lot like sex, it's a hell of lot better if you've got someone to do it with. That's where a club comes in handy.

RE: Why the AMA is not growing...........
I'm not going to read every page of this thread to find out if anyone has asked, or stated this, so here I go. "If" the AMA is not growing, and I'd like to know who knows that it's factually not growing, has anyone ever thought that the economy may have something to do with it? My club membership is actually down. I know that the local hobby shop is somewhat struggling, and I also know that online stores contribute to this. But, people's money is very, very tight right now. The hobby isn't growing right now, so there's a very good chance that the AMA isn't growing. With this being said, why would it be a big surprise if the AMA isn't growing?

RE: Muffler performance
The stock muffler is a dog. Sure, it keeps things quiet, but the engine's performance is crap. The B&B muffler will perform better, but don't expect a huge difference, and it will be louder. I've got a G62 in my Yellow P47. A buddy of mine built an exhaust system which ran from the muffler through the firewall, exiting at the scale supercharger dump location on the lower side of the fuse. He used pipe that was just large enough to fit over the exhaust tubes of the muffler, and there were a couple of 90's and 45's in both stretches of exhaust. With all of this being said, I never thought my engine ran up the way it was supposed to. I'm running a 22X10 warbird prop. It ran good, just not great. One day while flying, I realized that the engine was coming alive, as it was running better than ever before. The prop was actually starting to "bark". Upon landing, my buddy realized that the one exhaust pipe had come loose right at the muffler. Bingo! The engine, for once, was actually able to breath. I've since rebuilt my exhaust. I went back with the same design, but I've gone to a much larger diameter pipe. I've not flown it since doing this, but I'm quite positive the result will be positive. No matter which exhaust you use, if you want performance, and you're not worried about noise, go with large-volume system. An engine has to be able to breath in order to run at peak performance. If noise is an issue, the B&B style muffler is about as good as you're going to get. Hope this helps.

RE: Meister 1/5 scale P-47
Gary, Your retracts sound exactly like the ones I had installed in a pattern plane. When the motors were running to "retract" the gear, they were struggling, just like yours. Not good. They will go out. First they will get to where they'll barely lift the legs. Then, they'll get to where they won't lift the legs at all. Just a warning. Not bashing what you're trying because I've been there just like you. My bet is that you'll be going back to air. Nobody has come out with a motor that is compact, yet strong/durable enough to stand up to the weight they have to lift. Maybe one day they'll get it right. Til then, good luck.

RE: Phasing out 72 Mhz.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with 72 mhz systems. They are very reliable and I've heard nothing of that frequency being banned. More and more people are going to 2.4, as I have, but I do still own and operate a 72 mhz sytem. The cool thing about 72 mhz is that since hardly anyone as using it anymore, it's much less likely anyone else will be needing the same channel as you. As for 2.4 not being reliable, I've not had one single issue since I purchased mine. I have the Hitec Aurora 9 and absolutely love it. So, if you ever decide to go 2.4, this radio (and it's receivers) is the most affordable out there. It's also the most user friendly I've seen. The only down side to 72 mhz is the fact that many events are 2.4 only now. The reason they've gone this route is to eliminate the possibility of same-channel interference. So, if there's no problems at your flying site with 72 mhz, and you don't plan on attending any large events, there's absolutely nothing wrong with staying with your current system.

You can step up to a 6 channel system for under $200. Once you get above 6 channels, the price starts going up significantly.

RE: Government intrusion in hobby flying
Ira, at Warbirds Over Atlanta, they do random checks on pilots to see if failsafe is working. While approaching the runway, a field marshall may approach a pilot asking the pilot to restrain his plane while turning the transmitter off. If failsafe is set up correctly, and engaged, the plane's throttle should cut back to idle. Preset control surface inputs may also be set. This is a very good practice. And you're right, mandating transmitters with full-time failsafe is a good idea. I'd be willing to bet that 50% fo the pilots out there don't even know what failsafe is. Toolman, that's probably what the result would be if an 85 pound, 250 mph jet hit a house. Let's look at this whole subject again. Surely some of you can understand why the FAA is getting involved. It's not a bad thing guys. Sure, the last thing we need in our lives in another form of government, but we've got to look and each incident with some sensability. I think what we are dealing with is "sensable". Mandating health care, totally the opposite.
