Mcmastercarr.com is an awesome place to find belt drive, gears, shafts bearing etc. They are an industrial supplier but will sell to anyone with a credit card. the online store is a bit tricky to work at first but you get used to it. Tom

RE: Large fishing yacht, need help.
I built a Dumas Donzi Z65 a few years ago. I ran 800 sized motors on a gear reduction units (turbo trans from FinedesignRC.com) with a 3:1 reduction. That was a nice set up but the gear reductions were pricey. My current scale boat that I have been working on is a Modelslipoways Broom 44. I made my own motor mounts and belt drive reductions from home depot purchased fiberglass bathroom board. I doubled it up with using thick CA and weights. I mapped out my motor and shaft areas. I "milled" everything out by hand with a dremel. That stuff is really strong and its easy to work with a dremel. I do not have pics of wither boat currently, I sold the Donzi, and the Broom 44 is packed up and I havent louched it for a while now. I will be selling it soon for to fund the BIG DOG! I found a local guy that is trying to produce an 1/12th kit of the Nordhavn EYF 75. His molds are about complete and its about to start producing them. If anyone is interested in one, let me know and I can get specs, pics price and lead time. I have seen almost every plug and mold that he has made for this project. I have also seen the model in person. I must say it is a amazing boat. I will have some pics this week Tom

RE: Large fishing yacht, need help.
As opposed to the 540 motors, i have used a set of 800 sized motors with excellent results. the torque is amazing and are really efficient. I also run gear reductions off the motors aswell. The gear reduction will allow for more efficient power. My first plan of attack is usually find the most scale correct propeller and work backwards to the motor gearing. A quick bit of math will find your proper gear ratio with the motor voltage, RPM, propeller operating range, and the planned speed for the model. as a hint, I am piecing together power for a new project. Twin 800 motors, (aprox 18000RPMs@12v) 5.0:1 reductions with 3 1/2" 5 blade props. The hull LOA is 75" with a 23 beam, I am expecting it to weigh in at close to 100lbs when ready to run. I will have removable ballast. this is not a boat I am looking to break any speed records, its a full displacement pleasure boat. Tom

RE: Donzi Powering
I was kicking around this just before I sold mine. I wondered the same thing. I had made the boxes for the vents out of 1/32" ply. I sealed them with some west systems epoxy. I never finished them or cut the hull. I dont think that it would make the hull weak a all. doing this would add so much detail to the boat. It will look great! Good luck! Tom

Yeah I think it may have gone out of production. I didnt see it on the website either. I think that there is a place in Ca. that still have it available. Tom

First impressions of the Broom 44
I was on ebay and come across a Modelslipways Broom 44. I ended up winning the auction for a steal! I received the boat about a week ago. I am pretty impressed. The previous owner started the build but stopped not far into the project. They installed the stuffing tubes, struts, and rudders. Also, cuts were made for the through hull fittings, portholes engine vents etc. This past week I have built the dingy, its close to ready for paint. Also, I have built the davits, and I have modified them slightly. I built a fine brass tubing into the davits. I have also modified the davit bases aswell. They will be power davits at some point. I moved on to the superstructure the other day. As I was mapping out the cabin sides to for the window cuts, and I found that the cabin was crooked. The port side section by the forward part of the cabin have been molded a bit off. I traced out the starboard side and applied a traced copy onto the port side, then attacked it with some sandpaper. I reshaped the cabin almost perfect now, it looks good now. I finished maping the windows and the rough cuts are complete. As for the quality of the boat from MSW, its great. This is one heavily built hull, 1/8" to 3/16" depending on where you measure. My digi cam isnt working or I would have had some pics to co along with this. Ill post some pics when I get my hands on a new cam. Tom

RE: stuffing tub question
the stuffing tube should be fixed and sealed to the hull. Used either glue or epoxy. Tom

RE: Donzi Powering
nothing like reviving and old thread. I ran my Donzi with a pair of 820 cans, they were on a set of FDM gear reduction units running a 3.25:1 ratio. this beat was swinging 2 1/2" 3 blade props. Each motor was running its own 208 esc. For battery power I had great luck with a D cell nicad 4800mah 14 cell pack. This boat would get over 20 mph. Not bad at all for a 28 lb boat. I could run it for 30-40 mins, not at full throttle, plenty of play time with this set up. I was looking into moving up to a 4.5:1 ratio before I got rid of it. that would slow it down a bit but I think it would have really improved runtime. BTW, I had not watercooled mine, and it barely got warm, let alone hot enough for watercoolong. I am building a Broom 44 now. Im building it with the Mini EVs running a 3:1 reduction. I plan on using only 12 D cells on this build. The EV has lower RPMs than the 820 (18k v 24k) if I remember correctly. I have a ton of pics of my Donzi, I just cant find them. Kmot, you may remember them for RRR a few years ago. Ill see if I have them on a disc somwhere. Good luck Tom

thats awesome! With that hull and set up, is that the reason that the wallet is sitting on top of the hull? Tom

RE: New boat with two 600 Escs (graupner).
A quick search on google shows the Jeti 600 navy has the ability of running 6 to 12 cells. If this is the fact running a 12V gel cell should be fine. I used to run gelcells in my Donzi, I was running 6v cells in series yielding 12v. The batteries were connected to two escs, one to each motor. The motors were on a 2:1 gear reduction swinging 2 1/4" 4 blade scale props. I actually cooked the cells due to the fact I had too high of a amp load. I forget what the max amperage draw is on the gelcells. I want to say its 4 times what the amp rating is on the cell itself. I changed my reduction to 4.25:1, that lowered my amp draw and it seemed to do the trick. I was running this boat on a 4 channel radio, so I had two channels for throttle, one for each motor. What batteries, and boat are you planning? Hope this helps Tom

Kmot, its been a long time, I used to post alot on rumrunner under Tbone. I have been out of the hobby for a while, but Im back. As for power, I was thinking of a SS1, running 12 cells. I have just enough room to run one of my turbo trannys. Ill try toget those pics up in the coming days. Tom

garwood speedster
Anyone here built one of these with the plans available on Ebay? I got the plans a few weeks ago, and I just finished laying the keel and bulkheads. Ill get some pics this week and post them up here. I was wondering about what people are running for power in them. THe one that I have ais a 30" version. It looks as if it was a 24" Sterling plan set that has been scaled up. Any input would be awsome Tom

RE: OMG!!! <7.2volt> 5000mah!! Thats crazy!!!
I know that full C and D sized cells are up there in mah. I had nasty setup in one of my boats for a while, 14 D cell 4500 sanyos for a while in one of my boats. I was looking into getting 9000 Mah before I sold the boat. That boat was 25lbs in the water and would run 24-25 MPH depending on water and wind. Look at the measurements of the cells, and compaire them to a battery pack. Im at work now but the look to be pretty big. Tom

Am I the only person who has one?
I recently bought a Dumas Donzi Z-65, I have done a ton of web searches up and down but I cant find a thing on this boat. I have found a total of two pics, one on the Dumas website, and the other on most sales sites(Tower, HL,) website. I am pretty sure that there are more than 3 in the world. I would like to see pics or websites if anyone has anything. Thanks Tom
