ORIGINAL: R_G Mother Nature cooperated again this weekend, at least temperature wise! Finished applying the silkspan to the wing. I'll let it dry well and then sand and feather all the seams. The next steps will be to apply three more coats of nitrate dope and a couple coats of sanding sealer followed by lots of sanding. RG [8D]
Boy does this bring back some memories. I haven't heard of anyone using dope and slik span in years. Great method, but a lot of work. Also the UFO was just an awesome model. Good luck and a great job.

My favourite WWII fighter. Started with a Gillows kit many years ago, did a Platt 60 size and then his 1/5 version, a 70 Brian Taylor MK XIV, an 88 version of the same MK XIV (blew the plans up) which I still have with a rebuilt wing. I have two 1/5 scale versions under construction and Iam considering 1/4 scale version.

RE: NEW Top Flight P-40??? 1/5 scale
ORIGINAL: JeffH Unless you have a top and bottom sheeting, using ply for a split type flap will eventually warp or curl. I built some for an AT-6 that had 1/8 square carbon tube as spars and they still warped. I finally gave up, built them from hard balsa sheet, and they were fine. If I was to do all over, I would use G-10 so that I could keep the flap nice and thin
Have you tried using two layers of 1/32" ply with a carbon cloth center? I have been using this for some time on split flaps and they have never warped. Both sides of the ply have to be finished with resin to stabilise the structure. Just finished doing this for the TF P-40 using the orignal rib structure from the old flaps and they are as thin as the orignal flaps and not a sign of any warping. Also, it got rid of the unsightly 1/4"+ gap at the trailing edge on the orignal flaps. This type of contsruction also gives a very stiff product.

RE: NEW Top Flight P-40??? 1/5 scale
ORIGINAL: gsmarino2000 A couple of times I have seen it stated that you need to make cut outs on the side for the slimline muffler. I switched from the socket-head capscrews to pan head screws. That gives me about .08'' clearance with the front screw; no cuts except to the bottom of the cowl. My flap fit is not perfect (about 1/8'' gap in the center) but I'm going to live with it. I installed the stock (non-retractable) tailwheel as the robart unit is still on backorder. Greg
I had at least 1/4" gap on mine. Made new flaps using ply and carbon laminate and used the orignal rib structure.

RE: 12FG and gear doors
Can be done using two retract valves, one for the gear and one for the doors, and two seperate channels. Operate both channels from the retract switch and use the in and out servo speeds on each channel to squence the doors and gear. This allows you to slow one servo so that the doors open before the gear comes down and the oposite for the gear going up. Very easy to set up and no mixes are involved although you could mix the two channels and use delayed operation.

Checked the manual and yes it indicates the wing tip. I don't know why, but I missed the wing tip part. Thanks for the input on this. Should take very little ballast to obtain the correct CG.

RE: CARF CT-114 Tutor 2.6m Build thread
ORIGINAL: Dave Wilshere Staale Go with the manual settings, these are real and not american safe settings...they are good for 95% of people. Tutor is not short of control power, elevator is very powerful, on landing you need only ''thought'' control for the flare. (Think about pulling in up and it's enough!) If you go back more on the balance point it becomes slightly pitch sensitive in fast flight, the tail area on a Tutor is not huge. Dave
I am just doing the CG on the Tutor and if the 65mm from the wing leading edge is used as the CG location, 6lbs of lead is required to achieve this on my installation. This is after adding 50mm to compensate for the leading edge extension on the wing root. I am doing the measurement at the wing root. If I do the measurement at the wing tip, the location of the CG looks more realistic and more in line with the CG location of 25 to 30% of the mean aerodynamic cord. Which this the correct location for the measurement? Is this amount of added weight normal? In one post they indicated that no weight was required to balance the aircraft. Without any added ballast, the model balances about one inch ahead of the main landing gear.

RE: NEW Top Flight P-40??? 1/5 scale
Just unpacked my new TF P-40. Quality looks to be quite good. Had a broken canopy which will be replaced by TF when they have stock. A question about the flaps. They seem to be quite flexible and do not fit the trailing edge of the wing. There is about a 1/4" gap. This appears to be the result of the flap being too deep at the front which does not allow it move up as far as it should. Has anyone else experience this and what have you done about it? I am considering redoing the flaps, with a carbon fiber plywood lamination, to make them stiffer and thinner so that they match the trailing edge of the wing.

RE: TBM DV8R anyone have one or about too?
Test flew my TBM DV8R today. Flew very well with very little trimming required. A slight bit of up evevator was required. Will also have to add more elevator down trim for the recommended flap settings. Power is a P-120SE, changed gear on mains to Robarts with 4" BVM wheels and brakes and used the Robarts struts from a PCM crashed orignal giving a very high stance and good clearance for the stab when flaired for landing. The nose gear is the TBM gear. Also moved the rear of the stab mounts up so that the elvevators are level with the rear of the fues. Landing was accomplished with no crow and was a non event except the nose wheel did not come down. Appears to be some binding with the steering arms on the retract and the mounting plate. Minor damage on the nose section as a result. Overall, pleased with the flying chacteristics. They appear to be very similar to my orignal PCM DV8R.

RE: TBM DV8R anyone have one or about too?
Glad it worked for you. Crow sure helped me on my landings with the orignal DV8R. You should be aware that it is still possible to get the dreaded bounce with crow. Don't ask how I know. I will be trying the spring thing on my new DV8R and I have often wondered about the incidence in the landing position adding to the problem. I have also considered comming in on approach with some brake applied to slow the model quickly on touch down.

RE: Would CROW mixing help the porpoising on landing???
Interesting discussion. Having had a DV8R with almost a 100 flights before losing the model, I was always cautious on landings. Some folks, I know, became so disillusioned with this aspect of the model they sold it. I used the recommended fap settings with crow and it would still produce the bounce if I was not carefull. When I became complacent, is when I would get into trouble with the dreaded bounce. Landing speed seemed to be the only thing I could come up with as the cause because it always happened when I didn't have the nose high on flair slowing the model. Had not considered the bounce being caused by the spring tension in the landing gear. Might be something to consider. I have also considered moving the CG further, but have never done so because it flew very nicely with the suggested one. I hve seen this airplane flown and landed successfully without crow and using the recommend full flap setting many times with no apparent problems (by others). Maybe they are just better pilots.

RE: TBM DV8R anyone have one or about too?
I have been following this with a great deal of interest because of the bouncing thing on landing and having had one of the original DV8R’s with almost 100 flights before losing the model at a fun fly. Bouncing on landing was a real big problem on my DV8R for the first dozen or so flights. The flap setting for landing was at 3 ¾ inches. Finally, I used crow with the ailerons moving up about 3/8 of an inch. The flap settings were kept the same. This helped a lot and the increased drag was very noticeable in flight with the flaps down and the crow. With these settings,I had to use ½ throttles to maintain altitude with a P-120. It was still possible to get the bouncing on landing, even with these settings, if the model was not slowed enough for landing. This eventually led to me losing the model because of a stab being damaged after a bounced landing and departing from the model during its last flight (didn’t check for structural damage carefully enough). The model was easiest to land when there was about a 10-15 mph wind down the runway. These where always done with full flap and crow. With this wind, the model came in quite slowly which leads me to think that the landing speed is the secret. During any landing with the DV8R, if I did not hold it off by keeping the nose up on landing, there was the inevitable bounce. The higher the speed the more severe the bounce. Having said all of this, I have seen this model flown numerous times without crow, using the recommended flap settings, with absolutely no bouncing on landings. I liked the flying qualities so much, that I recently purchased a TBM DV8R. The model is just awsome in the air, so I will be trying it again. Hope this is of some help.

Setting CAMBER MIX on 12Z
On a prevous post I indicated that I was having problems setting the Camber Mix on my 12Z. With the help of Bax and John from Futaba support, I finally have it working and thought others maybe interested in a description of how it is done in lay-men's language. I have found the Manual very confusing when applying the concepts to an actual model. Also, if anyone has simpler way of accomplishing this, or I have missed something, please do comment. So here it is, sorry about the length, but it is a long process involving many screens in the system. The whole setting procedure is done with the transmitter out of the RF mode (not transmitting) except where indicated. In the LINKAGE MENU select MODEL TYPE. Select AIRPLANE and in WING TYPE select two ailerons and two flaps. In tail group, select AILEVATOR. Go to MODEL MENU and select CAMBER MIX. In the CAMBER MIX screen scroll to ACT/INH and using the input dial, turn camber on. Group should be on SNGL. SWITCH should be ON , COND>DELAY on 0 and CUT SW OFF. Go back to LINKAGE and the FUNCTION MENU and scroll to VC1 which should be CAMBER, and set the default switch to LD from LS. The default is LS and necessary to keep LS free for other functions. Turn LD all the way to the left. It will act as a trimmer function for camber. This also a good time to set all other channels to the appropriate functions and switches. Back to the MODEL MENU, select CAMBER MIX and go to CAMBER AFR by using the enter button. In this screen leave the MODE as LINEAR and continue to scroll to the next screen using the cursor lever. In this screen, with ARF highlighted, push the enter button. This takes you to the CAMBER MIX D/R function switch assignment. If three positions are required for flap, up, take off and landing, a three position switch will be required and the switch will be set to be on for two positions using the switch setting procedure. Switch SB was selected and used, setting the switch ON for the two lower settings. Go back to the CAMBER(ARF) screen with the graph, and using the cursor, scroll to RATE A (don't know when RATE B is used). This should be at +100.0 with switch SB in the upper position or off. Move SB to the first, or mid-point, and set RATE A to + 30.0. Move switch SB to the lower position, and set RATE A to -20.0. These numbers will likely have to be adjusted later to suite the flap settings required at the different switch positions. As switch SB is move from position to position you should see the graph in this screen change and the values in the bttm of the graph will change as well. Push the RETURN button and go back to the CAMBER MIX screen. Using the CURSOR to FLAP in the CURVE AND RATE box. Push the ENTER button and using the CUSOR scroll to the next screen which will give you RATE1 and RATE2 for FLAP1&2. Set RATE1 at +50% for both FLAP1&2 and +100% for RATE2. Push the RETURN button which will bring up the CAMBER MIX screen once again. Using the CURSOR high light ELEVATOR in the CURVE AND RATE box. Push the enter button bringing up the next screen CAMBER(ELE). Using the CURSOR scroll to the next screen which give RATE1&2 for ELE & ELE2. Set RATE1 for both ELE at -10% and RATE2 at -100%. Push the RETURN button and go back to the CAMBER MIX screen. Using the CURSOR go to AILERON in the CURVE AND RATE box. Push the ENTER button and using the CURSOR scroll to the next screen which will give you RATE1 and RATE2 for AIL1&2. Set RATE1 at +100% for both AIL1&2. If only Crow is required at full flap deflection, RATE2 does not have to be set. Push the RETURN button twice returning to the MODEL MENU. Go to the SERVO MONITOR area and enter. The action of all the control surfaces should now show up when the flap switch is activated. Now turn on the RF for the transmitter and the power for the aircraft to fine tune the surfaces. The flap positions will likely not be where required and you may have to reverse some functions in the LINKAGE MENU. Also, the full up position of the flaps might have to be adjusted from the CAMER MIX screen. This is done by entering the CAMBER ARF and setting the OFFSET as required. Elevator trim positions will also have to be adjusted by setting the rates for ELE1 & 2 as will aileron.

Camber Mix 12Z
I have been having a difficult time setting up the camber function for my jet using a 12Z. My objective is to use switch SB in the upper position for flaps up, in the mid position with take- off flap and 3/8 elevator down trim, in the lower position full flap with ½ down elevator trim and about 3/8 of up in each aileron. Channel assignments are as follows: Chan 1- Left elevator Chan 2-Right elevator Chan 3- Retracts Chan 4- Left aileron Chan 5- Right aileron Chan 6- Throttle Chan 7- Left flap Chan 8- Right flap Chan 9- Twin rudders on a match box Chan 10- Nose wheel (RD as trimmer) Chan 11- Brakes (Right slider) Chan 12- Smoke (Left slider) Switches are assigned as follows: SE- Retracts SA- Three rates for elevator SB- Flaps SD- Three rates for aileron SG- Three rates for rudders To date I have tried setting up the Camber Mix to accomplish the settings but have been unsuccessful in getting the elevator trim function to work with the corresponding flap settings using a point curve in the elevator section. I have not tried crow at this point. Suggestions would be appreciated. [edited to show 12Z not 12X!]
