RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
You have it adavis! You're up! The Boeing 307/C-75. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_307 I had wondered why Boeing redesigned the tail on the B-17, and now I know. During a demo flight of the 307, the rudder locked while having full rudder applied to counteract the yaw of a" 2 engine out flight " . The plane crashed and the tail was redesigned and that was passed on to it's sister ship the B-17. Thanks Zip

This Aircraft ... 1. Although born of military blood, this aircraft was born a civilian. 2. Had several "firsts". 3. Was pressed into service when it's country called. 4. When called into military service , it was the only aircraft available to perform a specific duty. 5. After returning to civilian life, one became a Presidential Transport. 6. Four engined. 7. Only 10 built. Thanks, Zip

RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
The Army had many non-rigid airships (blimps) and one semi-rigid airship. But I think this was what he was looking for... "Amongst the most interesting U.S. Army Airship Service experiments was to pursue the ability to operate airplanes from airships. While both the Germans and British had experimented with releasing fighters from rigid airships, it was the US Army which first flew an airplane from the ground and 'hooked' on to a trapeze suspended from an airship. Many tests involving a Verville-Sperry M-1 Messenger Sperry Messenger airplane and TC-3 TC class blimps were made in the mid-1920s. Eventually the technology was assumed by the US Navy on the " Flying aircraft carrier flying aircraft carriers", USS Akron (ZRS-4) USS Akron (ZRS-4) and USS Macon (ZRS-5) USS Macon (ZRS-5).[23] " Thanks, Zip

RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
We'll start vague....(Maybe not vague enough) 1. It's use on military aircraft was started by the French... 2.The "Knights of the air" used this in common with the 'knights on the ground". 3. Before adopting this style national insignia, The American "Aviation section, Signal Corps" used a red star as a national insignia during it's involvement in the chase of Pancho Villa. Very similar to what the red Army used in WWII. Thanks. Zip
