RE: Extreme Flight 88
The comp arf -100 was what I was considering. Have seen a couple at are field but these guys do not fly 3d. Sounds like the edge will be the winner this go around then. Kinda like the fact of staying with the ef birds. I have loved them all so no sense in changing now i guess. Thanks guys!

RE: Extreme Flight 88
I always replace my wing bolts with metal ones, I have knobs that press on to the head and it makes it easy to rapid tighten them, since metal I use lock washer so they don't back out. Its been working well for a few years now...well until now that is. I lean toward the Edge, but those comp arfs are so good looking and no more wrinkles. But how are they for 3d. Not that i am an expert at 3d but that is what I like to try an fly. Any one have experience with the comp arfs? How does the edge compare to the yak and extra? I here its a happy meduim between the 2.

RE: Extreme Flight 88
Posting this here because we all have many of the EF planes Last weekend took motor (dle55) from yak 88 and bolted to my extra 88 (da needed to go in for check up ). Have not flown this bird for a year. I had 6 great flights until the last one[X(]. Crusing down the back leg at about 3/4 throttle deciding what manuver to do...Bang!!!![X(]. Right wing detached itself from the plane. Tryed to get plane out of spin and recover with knife edge but to no avail. So I found out my extra's experation date was 8/14/2010.[:(] Was able to recover all gear and all looks great[:)]. Turns out at some point I robbed the lock washers off the extra, when I put it togehter at feild I did not notice the missing lock washers..Opps[:@] The big problem is what plane to get next. Thinking of EF edge, comp arf extra 300, or a sbach (piloit). So help me chose or point me to another model.

RE: ESM Fairey Swordfish
Why all the damage? did I miss something? That's the way I cg mine. As for the incidences' you could be right, but my fish is now flying pretty good so I will leave at is. Plus tired of tweaking the thing, time for me to move on to finishing the details. Thanks for the info, its good to know and have as a reference.

RE: ESM Fairey Swordfish
Well just got back from the feild. The swordfish flew great with the new incedences. At the end of the flight motor flamed out do to being to lean with the cowel on. Dead stiked on in no problem. The new tail wheel system works good (just like Ty's setup). However the plastic hub holding the tail wheel is just not strong enough for are rough feild. The wheel just would not hold a good center. Threads for set screw are to weak to tighten it enough. Any way I will fix that by machinig one out of alum. By the way Ty one of my flying buddies says hello (John Smith )..He has been helping me alot with this plane. Lot diffrent flying from 3d..[:)]

After reveiwing my tail for a bit I did try and unistall as to fix incedence. I was able to remove it with some effort. So I have the tail set 1.5 deg same as bottom wing. Adjusting top wing now, then re balance to the 4.5. Will fly sunday and see how she does.

RE: ESM Fairey Swordfish
Well got my bottom wing to 1.5deg, best I can do without major rebuild. Got tail to 3.5, not much I can change ther since its glued in. So to change it I would probly have to rebuild all tail from scratch. So good for now, I will adjust with down trim. still need to match top wing. I just cant understand why I have to have so much weight on the nose. I have all gear forward of gear. Others are running lighter motors than the dll55@3.5 and (ex. laser180@2.5 lbs )(satio36@3.5) dont seem to have to have all this weight (4lbs). The plane did fly but I just want to make things as correct as I can.

RE: ESM Fairey Swordfish
But. if I am at 3.5 and you are 1 and both top and bottom are matched then at 1 deg the leading edge of top wing would be more forward than at 3.5 deg, true? This would make your cg mark not relavant to a wing set at 3.5, since cg is based from top wing, am I thinking right? Seems like a better cg point would be from bottom wing since it cant move forward and aft? Could you provide a measurement from back of cowl ring to leading edge of center top wing. I think this would allow me to match cg point regardless of incedence, correct??? I think most of my problem is a result of a tail with +5deg. Man wish we had this info from the start (in the Manual ) sure would have saved me a bunch of rework.

RE: ESM Fairey Swordfish
TY, what did you do to get 1deg on bottom wing. On my plane the wing base mounted to fuse is at 3.5 to begin with. matching leading edges and trailing of the wing to the base will give 3.5 incidence on wing also. So did you shim the base or just adjust the anti rotation holes to get 1 deg incidence on wings?

RE: ESM Fairey Swordfish
OK then seems like my problems may be do to the increased incidence's in the the wings and tail. I to built the plane using the jigs so i don't know why it is so different. As of last flight my #where; Bottom wing 1deg top wing 3.5deg tail 3.5deg At least now we have some # to go by based on your maiden (thanks Ty). Do you think if I change incidence's to your # i may be able to take some weight off the nose?

RE: ESM Fairey Swordfish
Will been flying and trouble shooting this bird all weekend. Here is a brief recap. First flight: CG set to manual. Very tail heavy managed to land it but flipped at end of runway. No damage. Second flight: Moved CG to 3.75 by adding 5lbs to nose using a tempory tray attached to standoffs of motor. I flew! but seemed nose heavy. Still need a lot of down trim to maintain level flight. Flipped again at end of runway. no damage. Third flight: Removed 1lb of weight putting CG at ????. (same trim settings)...Flew much better and had a enjoyable flight,... until a rich low end condition caused the prop to cease rotation. Had to land it in the tall weeds. No damage. Fourth flight: Tuned motor and added more ele throw (1/4more than manual). much better. Flight felt solid in the air and very predictable. Finally had a good landing..Ya!!! Tail wheel is way to weak, to much bounce action. I have a DL55 (0 deg down thrust) on her and she was fast. hard to slow it down for landing. However was running with no cowl So things to change for next flights in the future: Change tail wheel wire to 5/32. Should help bounce and nose over. Prop down motor to 22x8 (was 22x10) or purchase smaller motor. Adding the cowl may help also slow it down. Change wheels to 5 inchers. Should help nose over. Provided wheels look to small anyway. Don't care for how much down is needed but it is what is at this point. Will continue to run the temp weight tray until more reports come in. Bishop holding out for what you results are. I am guessing that the new CG is about 4 1/4 I will get a good measurement later this week as time permits. If one where to read all the different ESM model Threads a common them is that CG per the manuals are 1 inch back farther than needed. A friends LA 7 was same way, watched him almost dump his in do to tail heavy condition.

RE: ESM Fairey Swordfish
I see where you are going with this. most of us built per manual using the jigs provided. Doing that gave large incidence in top wing. no one knows if this is correct or not. You may find like in my case the tail peices just dont fit good and you will have to scab them together best you can. The saddle for the tail was not level side to side on mine. Yours may be the same. Since we have no incedence # for tail or wings its just a guessing game.

RE: ESM Fairey Swordfish
Ya its a mystery to me also. How much incidence does your top wing have? Mine measured out at roughly 7deg., that seems like allot to me. What is the distance from top wing leading edge to your bottom wing leading edge(your top wing could father back than mine). It seems that might be place for a difference. Its taken me 6 weeks to assemble this bird. I have been very careful to measure 3 times before each cut or glue. I have had some very experienced scale builders from are club checking up on my work and they have been happy with what I have been doing. So I believe at this point I have done this build correctly. Again its a mystery, hope others will post as they get there planes in the air. Maybe we will find a pattern to this difference. So we can implement some corrective action.

RE: ESM Fairey Swordfish
Well just got back from Maiden flight balanced out per manual. Not good. Had to land using full down elavator. Plane nosed over and fliped on touch down. No damage except for broken prop. So I think the 3.75 cg is a better starting point and will adjust for that. Sorry I didnt follow Bishops adivice, But with others saying 5.500 was working them what do you do.

RE: ESM Fairey Swordfish
TY,to acheive a 3.75 cg I will need to add 7lbs to the fire wall. To get the 5.1cg I would need to add 3lbs. It is what it is I guess. Iwill go with 3.75 CG to start. Makes more sense, most scale bibes use a cg of the leding edge of bottom wing. That translate very close to your math of 3.75cg

RE: ESM Fairey Swordfish
OK Ty found something intresting. I blocked the plane up level and guess what. Have about a 0.250 of up thrust!!!. This is a DL55 mounted with stand offs to fire wall. If I were to fly this way it would go sraight up no mater what the CG was. Did you happen to take note of your thrust angle? I will have to shim mine down back to 0 and go from there. Im gald I paid such high dollar for a plane with a none level tail (same as you) and a firewall not glued in straight and level. Wonder what else i will find when i try and fly it.

RE: ESM Fairey Swordfish
I have the wing done and in primer. Rudder and tail are done awaiting glass. Fuse is built and in process of shaping and fitting. This kit builds easy, this is my first large scale build and first war bird with retracts. The plans are very good and the cd of build phots is worth it. I purchased everything he had for it. Since this is my first largescale build I am not going to get crazy with the scale details like some of the others have at scalebuilders.com. I have some very experinced builders in my club and they have been impressed with vances offerings. Vance is a great guy to deal. Have qustions as you build just give him a call, he's happy to help.

36 or a 43 would be better choice than my dl55. They advertise up to 50cc though, not sure why. I went with 50cc because thats my plane size of choice. So I will be able to use the motor in future planes. Made all my repairs to the fuse and wings over the weekend, got the motor installed. Came home to today with a box awaiting me. Yaa, cockpit kit. Great work Ty. Now to the install....
